It"s been years since I mowed without an ORC. Just forgot to mount that puppy.

Whew boy! That"s crazy stuff happens. The N was pretty much an out of control beast. I did get it turned and avoided the bar ditch and did get it stopped before I hit the oak tree. Turned way wide, clutch didn"t work, couldn"t get it out of gear...sheesh.

Well, no harm done but it did sober me up...and I don"t even drink!

Dang...do not run that bushhog without an ORC.

That"s crazy thrilling to run without an ORC.

Just bought a 9N and plan on mowing with a 6' foot woods finish mower. How do I know if it has an ORC already?

Thanks,
Sean

The ORC mounts between the drive shaft and the PTO shaft stubbed out the back of your tractor. You should be able to look see. Or:
Look over your rig and then trundle down to the farm/ranch store and look at an ORC. You could even buy and ORC and take it out to see if your rig has one.

Rob, I have used my bush hog without an ORC, but I prefer to have it installed. They really add alot. I have had the roll pin fail, break up, inside the ORC and it can effectively disable the function. SO it is possible for anyone to effectively be "driven" when you don"t expect to be.

Let me say this, DON"T FORGET TO TRY TO DISENGAGE THE PTO... you may have to kinda clutch a bit to "unload" the drive line. The lever isn"t completely out of reach and it can save you grief if you"re able to get it disengaged before the ditch or shed or favorite apple tree becomes too personal!!!

Guys, Don"t lock up mentally and just ride it out when there are options.

Well hey Duey, that"s a good reason to take the ORC off once in a while. From what you say, I sure don"t want that pin coming apart. I might put "pin replacement" on my annual list. They don"t cost much.
It takes some time to realize what"s happening when you don"t have a good ORC. Don"t always have a lot of time to spare. I stopped only a few inches from that tree today. That was after I just avoided dropping a front wheel off the end of a 24" culvert.

I believe in doing it the safe/easy way. Install the ORC and leave it there, never take it off.

good safety reminder i mow with and without one, but the without part is on 20 acres with no fences and very few trees, most of the time i run one, p.s. if one of you just bought a old faded international 284 without a live pto, to mow with and it has a big tree shaped dent in the left front corner of the hood, i dont know nothin about that dent, ericlb

Hi Rob,

That was a good safety testimony regarding the ORC.

I"ve been avoiding mentioning this on the forum but I have had my 49 8N for 28 years and have done lots of mowing/brush-hogging and I have never owned an ORC. I agree that it is probably the best thing since sliced bread and I have had every intention of getting one but just never got around to it.

I"ve learned to use the N without it. The key is to keep in mind that the centrifugal energy of the rotating blades of the mower will transfer power into the transmission when the clutch is depressed; this energy transfer will drive the tractor a few feet before you can stop it or until the blades stop turning.

I"ve never had a mishap using the tractor without the ORC but I have had a few close calls.

I hope to get an ORC soon.

Best regards,

Rick H. Ga.

Bingo. You can do it, even safely, if you know how. Did it myself for many years but the ORC is forgiving of some mistakes and highly recommended, especially for novices. Live PTO is better yet.

I, too have bush-hogged many years without an ORC! In fact, I didn'd even know they existed! Just thought the tractor/bush-hog combo did it as "the nature of the beast". Only time I scored an ORC was when I bought a new (woods) "bush-hog", and the PTO did not match up. (I still have the small one) Been meaning to change it, but since I have the original PTO pulley, and use it to run the Dreaded Ferguson Cord-Wood Saw, which is SAFE, if ya know how to use it! I won't be able to use it, unless I manage to convert the pully to the new larger PTO, which I have not done. (If anyone could tell me how to do it, I'd be grateful.) Anyway, got used to it, managed to use the inertia stored in the blades for many useful things. Actually not hard to do. Just makes ya aware of engine/transmission/pto speeds and the necessity to get them all the same before shifting. Just like the old 18-wheeler trannies. No syncromesh in those babies! Adept use of the PTO lever is essential! Of course, I am EXPERT CLASS DRIVER, and have been operating this tractor since I started operating tractors, since my Dad scored it new when I was very young! NOw, I have an ORC, just scored a nice new one last year..went for the QuickDisconect model, which required me to modify the PTO shaft to allow it to work, but once done, it makes it easier to hook up. And, it lets me take the ORC off when not using it! Good deal! So, don't apologise, "been there done that". Good to see someone else running without ORC! Still have the McClenny Cutter, one of these days, I'm gonna get it running again. It was twice the machine the Woods is. OLD=Good New=BAD!! Bent the H** outta the Woods the same day it was delivered trying to do the same stuffs that the McClenny Cutter did. Maybe take the Woods Gearbox/Pto/blades outta Woods and install in the MC. Would have fixed the MC, but the company has long gone outta business, like all good companies do! Man, I HATE CHANGE!! But that's different rant, hehehe!!! This is the remains of The MC! Note the 1/4" steel sides/top of the deck! Did not bend, despite the "torture it took".

I"ve run without an ORC but it"s a whole different outfit that way! I was ok without it when I knew what I was up against but having run with an ORC and the tricky stuff a dim memory it sure was a wake up to find myself unknowingly without it.

Man, you don"t know what you"re missing not having an ORC.
