About 1 year ago I put in a new cylinder and piston, the naa piston with the O-ring. I have a new relief valve but I have not put it in yet. I also put in the new 134 oil and my lift works great. This is a 1947 2n with the Zane thang and overdrive. Today I had a 400 lb load and the pump is quiet while it is lifting the load. To hold the load at a certain height, I got quite a bit of knock especially in overdrive with the faster speed. My question is, will putting in 2 new cam blocks quiet down my pump? Would I also need the pto shaft bushing? The pump has never been out of the tractor since we bought it in 1953. I still have good pressure at any speed hot or cold. With the 400 lb load my lift leaks down in about 1 hour. Thank you for your help on this matter.

The pump knock is due to wear. I wouldn't tear the pump apart just because I heard the knock.. unless it's pressure was low, or had other probelms. It'l probably keep on knocking for decades..

However.. if you are itching to drop the pump and tear into it.. go for it.

The thinner oil pronounces the knock.. normally I'd use thicker oil.. If you had a live thang.. you couldn't do that.

I had the same knocking and
also shuttering when the load
was in the neutral (hold) and also
raising. It was the 20 wt fluid
I have been adding to the hydraulics
as the seals were leaking.
Put 90 wt as orriginal and no more
knocking and no more leaking.
I even had a leak from somewhere
under the steering collumn.
No more...

Yeah, there"s a lot or good to be said about the heavier oil. I"m not at all impressed with the light 134 stuff and it wouldn"t be my first choice. Price and cold weather performance are the only positive considerations for the 134.

"cold weather performance"....I know No. Ill. is not Alaska, but we do get cold(-15F). I just let it warm up for 5-15 minutes. Usually don't have any problems. It may be a little slow initially, but once down the driveway plowin snow, its working normal. I'll stay w/the original fluid as well.
FWIW.....don t. ....

The Ford folks spec'd the heavier stuff when these fine machines were built! Do we know more these days? H** NO! Use the ORIG SPECIFIED stuff! Your tractor will thank you! New=Bad, etc. ;-)
