If anyone is interested i found the perfect repair for the head that has been plained and the pistons hit the head without a gasket! The place to call is MACHINE WORKS in Herman Nebraska Phone # is 402 456 7721 ask for Wes. He has a cutter that is the perfect match for the conture of the ford n series piston. What you have to do is place the freshly planed head on the block with the piston of #1 cylinder at TDC "without the gasket" With a feeler gauge measure the gap in between the head and block . tell him what the measurement is send him the head and $50 later all of the piston recesses will be relieved so that the pistons will be properly spaced from the surface of the head!Hope this saves you some trouble!

I don't get it. The head being surfaced should not have anything to do with the pistons sticking above the block surface. They don't. I can understand that the valves may hit a head with too much taken off, but not the pistons. Confused.

Why would you want to put on a head without the gasket?? Doesn't it leak?? If you recess the head then you would loose any compression gained by not using the gasket. I must be missing something.

When i surfaced the head i was told that if the pistons hit the head without the gasket that cumbustion is hampered by the fact that the piston is too close to the head " hot spots , incomplete combustion ,ect..." Never would i put a engine together with out a head gasket but now that the head has been milled the chamber is closer to the piston dome it needs to be relieved to put it back to the same combustion chamber volume.Just thought that anyone that has assembled a engine after the head was milled and was considering two head gaskets had another option.

Something still doesn't make sense to me. First, the N pistons aren't "domed". Secondly, your concern is not if the pistons hit the head, they won't, or whether the head combustion chamber is too close to the piston, it isn't, but rather whether the valves will hit the head after the head is surfaced. What machine shop are you using that gives you advice that's irrelevant to the N engine ? Unless the shop showed you that the head was warped, the head probably didn't need to be trimmed in the first place, for peets sake. Finally, never ever use two head gaskets in unison. It won't work. Bolt the head on without a gasket, snugged up only, turn the enigne over by hand, and see if the valves hit. You can also do this check with some forming putty in one of the combustion chambers. If everything clears, put the head back one with a gasket, and torque accordning to specs. My $.02
