Ok, I am going to swap a 2N engine into my 8N side dist. tractor. I have decided to convert to 12 volt while doing the swap. My question is if I buy a 12 volt coil for the front mount engine do I still need to run a ballast resistor? If so is it wired in such a way to have 12 volts while cranking as the cars did? Sorry for all the redundent questions but I just like to have things straight in my head before I start a project. Thanks.

A true 12v coil will not need a ballast resistor. I think there is an electronic ignition solution you might want to consider for your new 12v 2N. Check with Genesee products, they have first rate stuff, well documented and easy to install.

"True 12V. Coil" is the key. A lot of coils you get at auto supply houses are really 6V. coils with a built in ballast resistor. James
