Broken rear axle shaft

I got a phone call last night from a friend with an 8N that has a broken axle shaft. He said it broke right at the splines going into the diff. The splined part was still in the diff. when he disassembled it.
Has anyone on this board ever experienced that? I can't imagine the force required to break that shaft unless it was defective to start. He is about 100 miles from me so I have not seen the tractor.
I have two shafts out of a tractor that I salvaged
and I am meeting him at the QCI tractor show in Marshall, Michigan, this week-end.

Barnstormer, I answer to your question, yes I broke the left one in my 9N about 6 years ago trying to pull the neighor's orange tractor out of the mud. All I did was tighten up the chain, let the clutch out, the front of the tractor came up a little and she stopped. So it does happen. Tell me about the show in Marshall as I live in the Lansing area and havn't heard about it. Thanks, Donn

Hi Donn,
QCI Inc. is an RV campground about 8 miles south of Marshall on old 27. A group of seasonal campers got together with the owner and organized an "all colors" tractor and engine show last year and we had a lot of fun.
This week-end is again "all colors". We also have a flea market and garden tractor pulling.
The flea market is being set up in one row of the week-end camping so that vendors can set up a camper with water and electric.
You can call QCI at 517-767-4161.

I have seen and heard of axle shafts twisting in half on Funk conversions with the 6-cylinder engines, but not on the 4-cylinder. I suppose it is still possible under the right circumstances. If he was holding one brake and transferring all the power to the other wheel, and he was getting marginal traction where the tire was slipping then grabbing suddenly, then there might be enough torque applied in an instant to twist the shaft.

Keep in mind that early and late 8n's have different seal arangements int he trumpets. Early 8n only have an outter seal.. late 8n's have an inner and an outter axle seal.

Yes. Another friend has a late 8N and I will be fixing an axle leak for him in the next week or so.
Maybe if I cut down on friends I could find time to work on my own stuff. I'm getting like the plumber with leaky faucets or the electrician with outlets that don't work. grin
