I am getting ready to order my parts to swap my engine and convert to 12 volt on my 8N. The motor I am installing had been sitting for several years. I did have to squirt a little oil in the cylinders to get to fire up. It was full of antifreeze with no leaks. I ran for a good 20-30 minites with no trouble. Should I replace the head gasket because it sat so long or give it a try. I think the engine has been rebuilt, I just don't know when. I just want some advice from you more experienced many here. Thanks

Well if it where me and it had sat for a year or more, I'd fill each cylinder with tranny fluid, go to bed and then the next day pull the plugs and spin it over. It can/will make a mess but it will also loosen up the rings valves. It will smoke a lot for a few minutes but that will clear up. The head gasket should be good. Shoot I have one tractor that had sat for 15-20 years and was stuck and I haven't ever had the head off, and my son drove it in a pradade of power last fall. I also know the rings in that tractor are at least 50 years old. It was my grandfathers tractor.

old,
Why would he put anything in the cylinders and let it sit? He already ran the engine for half an hour.

Well he said he had to put oil in the cylinders to get it to start which to me says low compression/stuck rings. And I have found out the hard way that stuck rings can mean a broken ring if you aren't careful.

Others with much more actual experience with these old flatheads will chime in but I KNOW what I'd do.....Fire it up and run it and never look back..... ..... ....
