Wagner loader used for round bales

I've recently completed the installation of the Wagner "Ford 2" loader on my 2N and am wondering about the possibility of removing the bucket (easy to do just to pins) and replacing it with a custom made assembly with a couple of bale spears. Once a week or so I need to move a round bale (5' x 4' ?) into the coral for our horse and mule.

Other than the strain on the front axle will the loader lift the bale?

It does very nicely with a full load of SB2 gravel.

A few weeks ago we were moving round bales with a pipe loader on a JD 530. The lift arm broke at the pivot point and stopped just short of driving itself into the operators face. If he hadn`t seen it coming he might not be with us now. The 530 could handle the weight but the loader just wasn`t designed for it. The bale spear is dangerous but so is the arms swinging around in your face.

Brad,

I don't think the loader will lift a 1000# round bale. I use 1100# 3x4x8' rectangular bales for my horses. I tie a rope around them and then drag them wherever I want them. I tie the rope below the rear axle and pull them with no problems.

Most round bales I see hover right around 1000# and up. That's a whole lotta weight. Many other N owners use doodle bug type trailers to tote round bales, as the 3pt lift hyds pressure relief valve is real close to popping if you can get a round bale on a rear spear.

What type of pump are you using?

I fthe pump handles it.. I imagine it would lift.. but i gotta think it's going to do in the front end of the tractor.. not to mention those skinny 4x19 tires will probably flatten out and get burried..

The loader has the stinger driven pump. Not sure what volume the pump is but it effortlessly lifts the front bucket (36") loaded with SB2 with no strain.

I have the later 8N 16" wheels and hubs on with 10 ply truck tires.

Its definitely steering by Armstrong but I found with weight on the back lift it take some of the effort out of steering.

I do agree it will be hard on the front end. The total distance the tractor would have to travel with the round bale would be somewhere around 300 feet or so max.

I am going to build a doodle bug type trailer but thats going to take a while. I'm still scrounging metal and parts. I have the axle and a few other odds and ends but won't have a chance to build it until later this summer. The use of the loader would be once a week until the doodle bug trailer is done.

Pump volume won't be a concern except for speed.. pump pressure and relief pressure settings will determine what it can actually lift.

A close in heavy bucket isn't the same geometry as a 5x4 roll that sets as much as twice as far out.

In general, rear weight helps offset front weight.. but at some point you are gonna reach some design limits on that old tractor... For instance.. for S&G's.. the loader / frame weighs what? 400-500#? Guess 1000# on the roll.. though could be anywhere from 800-1500# in reality. Noy.. counterballance weight. I'd have to think you would be using at least 600# on the rear.. maybee even 700. My gut feeling is the middle point between those front and rear loads are gonna pop bolts or castings at the diffy/trany connection.

Not saying it won't work.
