Anyone ever hear of a 5N Ford tractor?
It has a 6 cyl motor, and was supposed to have been made for moving airplanes.
Can anyone shed any light on this bit of information?

Thanks for your replies. I am inquiring for a friend. As you suggested, it may be a Funk Conversion. I haven"t seen it yet, so will investigate deeper.
Thanks again, everyone!!

I think you have mixed information. There is no 5N, but there were Ford models called BNO-25 and BNO-40 Mototugs that were 2N tractors converted into air plane tugs by Ford during World War 2. These used the stock 4-cylinder engine with lots of body armor, special equipment, and deletion of the three-point and hydraulics.

Then there were the Funk Aircraft Company conversions done in the late 1940's and early 1950's. These were repowering kits bought by farmers to install flathead and overhead valve 6-cylinders, and in some cases flathead V-8's. They were not mean't to pull airplanes, but instead 3-bottom plows. It is just coincidence they were built by an airplane manufacturer.

not sure if this helps, but i guy i did some hauling for out to a ranch thought he had a '5n' tractor, i told him to have it at the headquarters when i got there as i wanted to see it, the tractor did have 5NXXXX cast into the transmission housing, but some investigation reveled it to be either a 2 or 4 thousand series, [ no decals, and at least 5 different colors of paint thru the years,] i couldnt find any serial number, but by the squared off sheet metal, it was no n series anything
