Does a sherman trans gear up for higher speed or gear down for lower speed as for possible tilling? What is a sherman trans worth?

Bob..... ...yes and no. There are 2-speed OverDrive Shermans with a "L" shifter lever over yer left toe. There are some less common 2-speed UnderDrive Shermans with a "L" shifter lever over yer left toe.

Then there is the more common and popular dealer installed 3-speed Combo Shermans (OD + UD + Std) with a crooked doglegged "S" shifter over yer left toe.

Problem with UnderDrive is it slows the PTO rpms too and really doesn't slow the tractor groundspeed enuff as the rare and fragile Howard after-tranny rototiller auxillary transmission. (Howard is about 3.5:1 gearing slowdown; Sherman UD is about 1.75:1 slowdown)

Shermans sell for about $500+ on e-bay, but only add about $200 to tractor price at auction.

Every spring, this great N-Board gitt inn-queeries about rototillin' with their N-Tractors; the answers is always the same. The N-Tractor is too high groundspeed for rototillin' but are great 2-bottom plowin' fool. (it'll plow an acre in about 1-hr but you'd rototill for 4-hrs for that same acre).

There are some that'll "bragg" about rototillin' with their N-Tractors, then they'll conffess take'm 4-6 passes with the rototiller before they gotten the soil tilth conditioned. Thats 16-24hrs for 1-acre. Iff'n Ya just gottta rototill, RENT a rototiller tractor ($100/day)..... ....Dell

Thanks guys, I didn't think about it also slowing the pto speed. Going to pick up a 2N with a sherman but it's out of state and have'nt seen it up close yet to know what it is.

Bob:

Sherman had an overdrive unit & an o/u unit. Do you have one, or are you lookin' at one?

The Sherman installs in front of the tranny, & the pto runs off the tranny, so it slows down the pto as well as the tractor. Not very good for roto-tilling.

Several folks(including myself)would like to have a Howard aux. tranny, slows the tractor w/o affecting pto speed. Great for tilling, but not for pulling.

Jeff
