When installing the fuel sediment bowl unit into the gas tank, do you use anything like pipe dope or pipe tape or what do you use on the threads when installing the part?

I have never used any thing on the treads and have never had any problems. And believe me I've pull and put on so many that I can't even begin to count them all.

Seems to be some controversy about this, not that I care strongly one way or the other.

If you search Google using "gasoline dissolve teflon tape" about half the hits says it do and half say it don't. I think I would lean on the "it do" side.

Even this about a (gasp) John Deere 110: "Remove the shut-off valve from the tank by unscrewing it carefully and inspect the strainer screen. If you need a new shut-off valve and screen, you can get it from John Deere for about $7. Replace the valve using some teflon tape on the threads." (http://www.essex1.com/people/speer/deere110.html)

I guess if you must, Permatex is supposed to fill the bill.

I never thought it did either, so I tried it- the stuff definetly broke down a bit, it was significantly easier to break apart. while it didn't 'disolve' like metamucil in water, but it seemed to break down. there could be differences in brands though to...and i wasn't exactly scientific! anyway, my 2cents.

whether it dissolves or not, there is NOT any controversy over the fact that, through ordinary wear and tear, if pieces of teflon tape come apart and go down stream, it is likely to be a bad thing.

Best to use pipe dope on that part to avoid tape bits floating around and causing problems.
