Recently aquired a 2N that had sat for 15 years. Trans was bad. Got motor spinning and primed on stand and even test fired to check for knocks before putting all back together. Since it was apart I painted it all up. converted to 12 volt because the whole electrical system was junk. 12 volt 2.5 ohm coil, new points, cond, cap, rotor, plugs and wires. Checked and rechecked points and timing. Firing order also. gets nice spark. tries to start as long as the starter is spinning but will not idle up and dies as soon as I stop cranking. Replaced sediment bowl and cleaned carb screen. Need help!!! I have even tried to pull start to save whats left of the starter. That worked better I can get it to stay running on it's own at max rpm and partial choke as soon as I try to idle down it dies. Could it be a head gasket problem? Compression was ok on stand 85-95 about what I expected after sitting so long. Any ideas?

Bob..... ...you write "tries to start as long as the starter is spinning but will not idle up and dies as soon as I stop cranking".

Well guess what? you've gottchure ignition switch power coming from yer starter side of the 2-terminal roundcan start switch under yer battery tray. Just swapp yer ignition coil power wire to the OTHER starter switch terminal ...ie... the BATTERY cable terminal. Simple, eh?

Learn how to adjust yer M/S carb. Both Ford and Marvel/Schebler say to adjust both the down-pointing mainjet and the side-pointing idlemix to 1-turn to start with. I set the down-pointing mainjet to 1-1/2 turns and LEAVITT!!!

Adjust the side-pointing idlemixture for maximum idle rpms, NOT SMOOTHEST running, MAX IDLE rpms. Understand? Then adjust the behind the carb throttle speed screw for a SLOOOooow 400rpms. Anything under 500rpms is probably fine. Do that song and dance 3-times; adjusting for max idle rpms and reducing the throttle idle-speed. Remember the M/S idlemix adjust is BASSACKWARDS; out for lean and IN for INRICH. My sidepointing idle-mix usually ends-upp about 3/8 turn. You'll know when you've dunner right 'cuz it'll power right-up when you advance the throttle lever from idle to 1/2-3/4 throttle with NO HEZZATATION..... .....Dell

It sounds like carb. problems. You should disassemble the carb. and soak in a good carb. cleaner. This should get all the varnish out. Blow out all the ports with compressed air and put in a rebuild kit. James

I have thought all along it was a fuel problem. I have cleaned everything. I will pull it tomorrow and try it on my 8N that runs like a top maybe then I can pinpoint carb or rule it out all together. I didn't look the manifold over real good. Is it possible it is rusted through exaust to intake?

First I would go back to the basic fuel and air adjustments (1 turn out from being completely seated). Second I would follow the air tube from the carb back to the oil bath and up through the top. If it has been sitting that long it may not be pulling enough air. If you take the plug out of the bottom of the carb, do you get a nice steady stream of gas? I had to take my gas line off and clean it and then removed the gas cock from the bottom of the tank. The inlet into the cock was stopped up and the screen filter was shot. Unfortunatley you cannot buy just the screen (from Ford anyway), and a new unit costs about 40 bucks. I cleaned mine out real well and fashioned my own screen over the inlet. These are just the steps I had to go through - I hope this helps but there are a lot guys on here with a lot more experience than me.
