Voltage regulator woes

I finally got some time to try and troubleshoot my charging (or lack therof) problem. I am 98% sure it is a bad voltage regulator. I just bought it last year from Tractor Supply, so being that it is less than a year old is why I left myself a 2 percent margin of error. I have 7 or so volts comming off the generator, and 7 or so volts at the Voltage regulator. I have 6.2 volts at the battery. There is no change when i rev the engine. When I turn the lights on, the Voltage at the battery goes down to right around 6 volts even, and back up to 6.1 or so when I turn them off with the engine running. I also have battery voltage at the terminal block.

By the way, this is a 1950 8N with original 6 volt system, and sidemount distributor. It has a rebuilt genny, starter, and a new wiring harness.

So my 2 questions are: am I right to point the finger at the Voltage regulator, and what makes them go bad? I pulled the cover off and sanded the contacts with 1000 grit sandpaper. This had no effect. The last VR that I replaced smelled like burnt toast, but this one looks like new money and has no burnt odor. Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to give adequate info. As always, thank you all very much for any advise or input.

Rob

Rob..... ..you did remember to "polarize yer new voltage regulator, didn't you? Iff'n you don't polarize yer voltage regulator the "cutt-outt" relay of yer 3-bobbin squarecan voltage regulator won't ATTRACT and pass the genny's ARM 7 volts thru to the voltage regulator's BATT output terminal that goes thru yer ampmeter to charge the battery. Which is why you are reading 6.2 volts at the battery.

You can "re-polarize" as many times as it makes you warm and fuzzy. Just "arc-spark" yer squarecan BATT & ARM (side-by-side) terminals under the oilpressure gauge with engine OFF. Ignore the 2-skinny black wires and concentrate yer arc-spark on the HEAVY yellow BATT & ARM wire terminals. I use a wide blade screwdriver, but you can use a wire iff'n you want..... .....HTH, Dell
