I am in the final stages of getting my 48 8n back together after a complete rebuild and painting. I am having a problem with the positioning of the throttle shaft as it passes through the back of the dash, it is getting hung up on the steering box. I have all the parts but unfortunatly I did not take a picture before dissassembly and can not find an illustration or explaination in any of the books I have. Can someone post a close-up picture of where the throttle shaft exists from behind the dash? Help of any kind is much appreciated.

Throttle shaft pics from my '50 sidemount 'N, for BIGGA564.
Unfortunately, in mine, the shaft itself at the top is behind sheet metal and hence you can't see how it's routed vs. the steering, perhaps it's different in the '48.
The bottom two pics though show how it comes out at the bottom.

Charlie..... ....I see you're missing the governor compensating spring p/n 8N-9827, 4.95"x.44dia that goes from the back hole titt of yer pinch-bolt 8N-9807 throttle rod bracket to a brackett (just barely shown) bolted to yer tranny above yer BIG-HEAD screwed teardrop ignition timing cover. Just thought I'd point that out. And yes, the 8N's throttle-rod is straight from notched throttle plate to the compression spring bracket tensioned by the pinch-bolt brackett and is the same for ALL 8N's..... ...Dell

Thanks Dell :)
I see it in Fig B165 of my FO-4.
I bet my local CNH will want $45 for said spring.
What am I missing out on by not having it ?

Thank you for the pictures Charlie. This helps clear things up a bit. I think I may still have a problem - When I run the throttle shaft straight down through the notched throttle plate I run straight down the side of the steering box. The only way I think I can get the rod to go through the compression spring bracket is to force the rod over and then through the bracket which brings up another question - does the lip with the hole in the bracket face to the front or rear of the tractor(I believe it is to the front)?and should the throttle rod need to be moved over in order to go through the bracket? Thanks again - I should have everything done on this tractor by this weekend and hope to get the throttle issue resolved sometime today.

Charlie..... ....governor comp spring 8N-9827, $5, (cheap).

It's to compensate for the pull of the governor's lever on the dashboard throttle rod and to keep the governor from pulling the throttle notches closed. Iff'n yer pinch-bolt brackett is spring-loaded tight, it probably won't do 'nuttin' but that makes for stiff hand-throttle control..... ..Dell

Problem Solved! Thanks to Derek at Just 8N's. If you connect the steering shaft/tube onto the steering box with the wide side facing to the front you will not be able to re-connect the throttle shaft. During the steering box rebuild I accidently attached the steering shaft the wrong way. I hope this helps others who may experience the same problem.
