WHILE I WAS BUSH HOGGING MY LAND MY 1941 9N SEEMED TO BE RUNNING FINE AND HAD MOWED ABOUT AN HOUR THEN OIL BLEW FROM THE GOVENER ON THE WHEEL AND THEN SHE STARTED SPITTING AND SPUTTERING THEN WENT DEAD. I LET IT COOL OFF AND CHECKED THE SPARK PLUGS AND THREE APPEARED TO BE FOULED OUT. I THEN PUT IN NEW SPARK PLUGS AND TRIED TO START HER. THE TRACTOR WOULD TURN OVER BUT WOULD NOT START. ANY SUGGESTION AS TO WHAT MIGHT BE WRONG WOULD BE HELPFUL. THIS TRACTOR HAS BEEN CHANGED OVER TO A 12VOLT SYSTEM.

BIG MOE..... ..spittin' and sputterin' is sure sign of WEAK SPARKIES. But I'll bettcha it'll start in the cold morning and run for about 1-hr.

Unfortunately, yer 4-nipple squarecan ignition coil is not as ruggid as we'd like it to be. And UNFORTUNATELY 12v conversions, unless done correctly, will BARFF yer squarecan ignition coil by OVERHEATING the coil and melting the insulative tar and shorting out some of the coil windings and cause WEAK SPARKIES.

Unfortunately, there are 2-ways to convert the 4-nipple frontmount distributor to 12-volts and I don't know which way yer 9N's frontmount distributor was converted. It could have been done the "cheap-way" by using the OEM 6-volt squarecan ignition coil and a 12-to-6volt converting resistor. ($3, cheep) ...or... the conversion could have used the new modern expensive 12-volt squarecan ignition coil. Unfortunately, NEATHER the 6-volt or the 12-volt squarecan ignition coil is plainly marked for its designed operating voltage. So I really can't help you there.

You are going to haffta be yer own 12-volt mechanic and figger out which way you want to generate yer sparkies.

Me? I'd use the modern 12-volt squarecan ignition coil and NO RESISTORS. ..... .respectfully, Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reasons.

That said, I haven't found the right reason for my eazy starting 6-volt 52'8N and I know how to do it right, the FIRST time. Infact, I know 8-ways to do it right and they all work.

Dell, Reminder that the 12V squarecan coils that are available for the frontmount dist. tractors are NOT "true 12V" coils and DO NEED the current limiting resistor, but NOT the voltage dropping resistor. As you have stated many times, the true 12V roundcan coil needs no resistor.
