Shoot some starting fluid down the intake of the air cleaner and try to start it then. If it starts OK then the problem is not with the ignition but is with the fuel delivery system.

BIGMOE..... ...while spittin' an' sputterin' is generally the sign of WEAK SPARKIES.

The "all-most wannna start" is a sign of WEAK COMPRESSION.

Unfortunately, alotta 12v conversions are made as a "band-aide" to a worn-out engine. Its called "dynamic-compression" which results of hittin' yer 6-volt starter with 12-volts and really SPINNIN' the engine for higher dyanmic compression and eazier starting.

Time to do the dreaded COMPRESSION TEST. Ford's specs: 90 psi, min (dry). Take all yer sparkies out, and plug yer compression tester into enny sparkie hole. Spinner fer at least 5-puffs and writter down. Now, squirt about 1-oz of regular engine oil down the sparkie hole to seal the worn piston rings. And take yer "wet" compression reading, and ritter down. Good engine will-up the compression +10psi. Worn engine will-up the compression +20psi. Engine in need of overhaul, wet compression will-up +30psi. NO increase in compression (wet); burned exhaust valve; or blown headgaskett.

Almost starts is almost always OVERHAUL TIME..... ..respectfully, Dell

Whats the spark look like?? If its not a good blue spark you have problems in the distubtor area. If its good and blue then you have carb problems
