Anyone here into old motorcycles? I recently acquired an old honda cl 160. Good spark, good looking, but poor compression on one cylinder. Don"t know too much bout old jap bikes and was wondering if you fellas knew about any sites/forums like this one for old hondas. Thanks for taking the time to look at an OT!!---Rob

I sold a 1964 S65 two years ago. Search ebay for Haynes manuals, local Honda dealers can get parts. I even had my honda dealer offer me the old microfilm parts fiche, like a dummy I didn't take it.( I didn't want to go thru the hassle of buying a reader). www . JCW . com has tires.
I even found an original owners manual at a car show swap meet.

Brings back memories. I bought a Bridgestone 90 Sport in 1964 or 1965. Neat machine, rotary valve two stroke. Easy to grind/saw the fiber rotary valve giving the same effect as changing the cam in a 4 stroke but far easier/cheaper. Yes the tire people. But I digress.

In those days CB 160s were the hot ticket and 305 Super Hawks were exotic. I rode with lots of guys with 160s and even though I had extensively modified my 90 and could dust the 150 Dreams the 160s were too much. Then in 1966 I bought the new Suzuki X6 Hustler and the Superhawks would vanish quickly in the mirrors.

Try this one first:

Link

It's a classic and antique bike forum. I think you'll find something there.

The CL160's are collectible material, and fun to boot. I've got 4 motorcycles and two tractors. For high speed fun the Concours Sport-Tourer can't be beat. For slow speed fun either of the tractors will do just fine!

Good luck with the project.

Rob

Had a couple of 160's..... .they are good bikes. It's easy to replace the pistons and rings and yes, Honda dealers CAN get you parts still. But first, try to get the rings unfroze with an oil treatment to see if that helps.

If the 160 has the overhead cam, which I think it does, then the weak spot will be the timing chain that drives the overhead cam. It should be the first thing that gets replaced. If that chain breaks, nasty things happen to the valves when they hit the top of the piston. It is not pretty.

I had a CB 160 back in the early 70's (first bike). Bought a 1966 CL160 a few years back which is the scrambler--up pipes, skid guard, no chrome tank, brace on handlebars, and no electric start which are the differences between the CB and CL. Drove it a couple of years and it has been sitting in the barn. In fair shape. Was thinking about putting it on ebay, don't have the heart to part it out.

They were nice machines. Topped out around 65 and got 70 mpg or so. Interesting since the were a "360" degree crank. Both pistons went up and down at the same time instead of 180 degrees apart. Smoother running bike.

Hey Pal, do you know what O.T. means? It's an abbreviation for 'IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ IT, DON'T OPEN THE THREAD'. You need some sleep. Pete Rajek

I had one of those many many years ago. Nice little bike, sure wish I still had it or one like it. I'd do a tranny fluid fill on the cylinders and see if it would help the compression. It also shouldn't be to hard a job to put in new rings and do a valve job to. When I had mine I delievered 300 newpapers a day on it, talk about a load on sundays LOL

The CL 160 was the Scrambler model sold from '66 to'68. My brother had one. Yahoo or Google it and see what comes up. There's got to be a site somewhere. You dumped that old TT project, I hope. Pete

Good memory! I got a real good price for the TT. This is titled as a 65 honda cl 160 which confuses me, because I was under the impression that they (cl 160 scramblers) weren't made until 66....any ideas?

Go to www.100megsfree4.com/honda or motoera.com, there's a page with a listing of I guess, every Honda made. Not alot of info, but interesting, I think. Pete

Rob,
I memory serves me the CL was the "enduro" model of the CB series Honda.

I did a quick ebay search and found 56 listings, so parts are still available. Back when Sociero (sp) Honda started importing bikes into the US he said that ALL parts for ALL Hondas would ALWAYS be available thru the dealerships.

I'd try to find a manual and go from there.

Scott
