'53 NAA with 12-volt coversion. Ran fine until decided to rebuild carborator. After rebuild, started and ran for about 1-2 minutes, then nothing. No sparks. 12V into resistor, 6V out. 6V into coil and into cap. Nothing out of cap. Continuity all o.k. New cap, rotor, points, condenser and no difference. Any ideas? Thanks

I do not understand what you mean by 6 volts into cap? Unless you are talking about the capacitor. If you are talking about the dist cap, then no 6 volts goes into it. Take the center lead from the coil and hold it about 1/4" away from ground and see if you get spark. If yes, then replace the center lead into the distributor cap and remove one of the spark plug leads and hold that puppy 1/4" away from chassis ground and see if you get spark. If you get a constant 6 volts into the coil primary regardless of point position, then look for a short on the distributor side of the coil especially where the wire enters into the distributor body. Then look at the points and make sure they open and close when the engine is turning over.

I'm getting a 6v reading at the distrubutor-end of the coil wire with the ignition switch on, but not cranked. I tried to ground-out the coil wire and no spark (ignition switch on and/or cranked). In addition, points open and close o.k. with 0v reading at distibutor-side terminal of coil (-) with points open or closed. 6v reading at resistor-side terminal (+). Thanks.

If you short the wire to ground at the distributor and then remove the short, you should get a spark out of the center lead of the coil as previously stated. You should be getting 12 volts at the coil with the points open. It should drop to 6 volts when the points close. (lead coming from dropping resistor) Sounds like the wire going into the distributor is shorted to ground or some other short in the dist.

There was a short in the primary where it enters distributor. Paper/plastic insulator not doing its job. Good sparks now with voltages as you described. Thanks again.
