I say damn good idea and I believe I will drain it at least with each oil change. I do remove and clean the sediment bowl at the oil change. I also full open and quick close the fuel valve while I"m at it. Doing that, every few years I discover the reserve, full-open position is plugged so I correct that before I get stranded.
Moisture in the fuel system causes at least a couple PITA problems I try to avoid.

Maybe 20 hrs with today's gas in reply to Rob, 12-03-2005 05:59:21
The gasoline I've been buying lately stinks so bad it would gag a maggot!

What"s that all about? They got a stinky additive in your urban area?

Maybe you need to get your gas somewhere else. Get off-road gas at Co-op if you want the bother.

I drained my carb a while back and had a devil of a time getting the plug back in, the threads seemed dicey. I am NOT gonna take it out now unless a darned good reason.

Go to a REAl auto parts place that has an Edelman or Weatherhead or similar cabinet of brass fittings, and get a little drain petcock with 1/8" MPT threads and install it in place of the plug. Some "other" tractor brands had a carb drain like that from the factory.

That"s not a bad idea. A lot of equipment will have that feature.
Most anyone with experience PMing industrial and commericial equipement is familiar with the concept.

That might be the biggest down-side to that maintenance. I"ve got a tap so it"s not a biggie. Water in the tank is the bigger problem but those carbs do get fouled with iron rust. Some of them; must be the moisture migrates from the tank.

Although I've never seen or remember seeing that statement in the book, I don't think too many follows that practice. Especially with the price of gas what it is today. (grin) I just make an attept to use good clean gasoline, keep the system clean and most of the time I run with the shut off in the wide open position and just keep the tank at least 3/4 full..... ..... .. but, whatever it takes to keeps her running is the way to go.

You"ll end up with a rusted gas tank if you don"t do something about the moisture in there.

Just a matter of time.

I agree, moisture in the tank can be a problem, but draining the carb will not keep moisture out of the tank. I think the best way to prevent moisture problems is to keep the tank as full as possible. I most always refill the tank every time I get done using the tractor. And if the tractor gets used a lot there is little chance of moisture causing any problems. Now if I didn't use my tractor very much, and didn't keep my tank topped off, then I would consider using a gasoline additive to prevent moisture. In the 35 years I've had my Jubilee and the four years I've had the 8N, I've never found a need to drain the carbs. YMMV.

I"ve never had rust in a tank either but I tap em to clear moisture and trash. Neighbor had to get one boiled out a couple years ago.
I hear these guys post about rusty tanks and all that mess and know there are ways to avoid that.
I"d never seen that 60hr note in the manual before and it makes good sense, I do see a moisture in my sediment bowl on occasion but I keep that clean also. With the oil change.
