Is there a way to remove the starter from my 51 8-n so that I can replace the starter drive & driveshaft? I've removed the through bolts & frame but I can't get the armature assembly out.

The trick is to hold your tongue right :-)

Remove the oil cannister, or at least remove the two bolts and push it towards the front a bit. You will probably have to remove the engine drain cock as well. Keep the starter as close to the engine block as possible while pulling it out.

It will come out.

Good luck,
Dan

Were you succesful in removing the starter? I am have the same problem, My starter drive does not engage all the time, I pull starter assembly back and spry with lubrication, then works fine for 6 months or so. I want to pull starter and replace drive assembly, would appreciate lettimg me know if you were succesful by removing the oil canister as sugguested above.

Thanks so very much.
