Hello, Im new to the tractor seen. Because I married into a family that has a beaten 8n 6cyl "funk"? So I have a few questions. 1. What is the part number for the oil filter? Would my local ford tractor dealer have it?
2. How much oil does it take to fill the engine? Type?
3. Tool boxes? Where is the stock location? When I open the door to get to the gas tank, there is a large opening that looks like a box or something would have gone there after the tank.
Thanks for your help. Ill probally ask for some more in the future.
The name focuzzn is my screen name for a ford focus web site www.focaljet.com , so I thought I would use it.
Mike,
Reedley, Ca.

focuzzn..... ..the "Funk" was a DEALER installed option which used the Ford INDUSTRIAL 6-cylinder flathead 226 cu/in engine. You will find NO FUNK PARTS at your local Ford tractor store, but you will find all yer normal consumable parts like oil filters and sparkies at yer local automobile parts store for a 1950 6-cylinder Ford pick'em-up. or Ford Automobile dealer.

I use 20-50wt oil in all my vehicles, which is 20wt oil until it gitts hot and becomes effectively 50wt oil. Modern oil is SO MUCH BETTER than 1950 oil. 1950 oil was also DETERGENT just like modern oil is. Iff'n yer engine turns into an oil-burner, use detergent 40wt. Probably 5-qts, check yer dipstick. Simple, eh?

Use AutoLite AL-437 sparkies gapped 0.025. They seem to work better with modern no-lead gasoline. And NO, you don't need enny lead additives, the engine came from the factory with hardended valve seats and besides there ain't NO LEAD in lead additives ennyways, EPA ya know.

And use copper-core sparkie wires instead of modern anti-static carboncore sparkie wire. Iff'n yer sparkie wires aren't limp like a wet-noodle, you'll have sparkies dancin' on the OUTSIDE of the insulation. When I replaced my sparkies, I bought a copper-core "hot-rod" sparkie kit for a Pontiac V-8 because it had "right-angle" sparkie boots, cut the wire lengths to fit. Simple, eh?

You can find out all yer tune-up specs at yer local library "Motors Manual" section..... ...welcome to the N-World, Dell

Rob..... ...what part of "I use 20-50wt oil in all my vehicles" don't you understand? It simplifies my buying.

1952 Ford 8N with 2100 hrs and 30 psi (hot)
1969 BMW 2002 with 385k miles
1972 BMW Baveria with 190k miles
1981 Volkswagon Diesel pickup with 190k miles
1982 Volkswagon Diesel pickup with 180k miles
1995 Dodge Cummins Diesel pickup with 177k miles

I change oil and filter religiously every 4000 miles..... ...respectfully, Dell

That"s the same reason I use this or that oil lot of times. Pretty much.

It"s what I got or it"s what is available.

Snowstorm predicted for last night, I was at TSC anyway, so I grabbed some 10W-30 so to get my oil changed and the blade mounted before it hit.

Been sitting since August, early- or mid-August. 35* and didn"t start first time. Or second time. Or third time, but the 6v 51 did start the 4th time. Started and stayed running, no problem.

So life is good.

That"s another way off-base post, right there.

But that happens.

Pay attention...it gets tricky.

Mike, take a look at John Smith's 8N Tractor Page on the net. You will find an enormous amount of accurate and useful information there, including a wealth of photographs that will assist you in working with your old 8N. That void that you are referring to when you open the battery door is where the original 8N tool box normally should reside. Many have been removed by their owners either because they have rusted out or their owners got tired of having to remove them to work on the tractor's electronics. Original tool boxes can be purchased from time to time on Ebay or from your local tractor boneyards. Replacements are also available from a variety of vendors that you can access through this site. Best of luck with your 8N. Warning! Your life is about to change! Once these old tractors hook you, you are hooked for life.
Jerry
