Having a problem with the manifold and exhaust pipe hook together. Even with the clamp tight the exhaust is loose enough to move easily. Should I get a new clamp for this, or is there something that I'm missing? Also, I keep having to replace manifold gaskets as they keep tearing at the rear of the engine. Is this common? I used to post here a lot but with the help of this board I got Frances running better than my cars. She still runs great, just want to be prepared for what old man winter decides to dish out. Thanks in advance. Rob P.S. Merry Chistmas y'all

Rob..... ...tip: use a hydraulic jack under yer exhaust pipe to FORCE the manifold joint closed BEFORE you tighten yer manifold clamp with the BIG side down.

Yeah, the #4 exhaust port is known to "erode" and blow out the gasket. Simple fixx it to drill a couple of shallow 1/8" holes in the eroded area to act like rivets and fill with HI-TEMP 2-part muffler epoxy from the autoparts store. Clamp the puckey flat before it cures. Simple, eh?..... ..Dell

try packing the joint with steel wool around the clamp and I agree you probably got it upside down.

Rob, chances are Ken is correct; these clamps do have a top & bottom. I do have one N that had an exhaust leak around the clamp no matter what I did; I suspect the replacement manifold (casting date 1984) was the problem. Rather than replace the manifold, I got a piece of exhaust pipe (actually, a reducer) at NAPA that had an OD just the size of the ID of the N exhaust pipe to make a sleeve. I indented the exhaust pipe to keep the sleeve in place, shoved the reducer into the manifold & put the exhaust pipe on. No more leak.

Rob, my guess is that you have the clamp upside down.. Look at the "V" groove in the clamp, there is a high side and a low side. On mine i wrapped a band of tin foil to help form a gasket. Some have used a strip of an aluminum can.

Yes , the #4 port has been a problem with the N motors. If left to leak, it will burn away the metal around the port and it will be necessary to build it up (some use JB Weld for this).HTH
