Well, I got my 9N with 8N motor running today. Changed all the fluids - even the oil bath air filter. So here are my latest dumb questions:

The lever on the left is the PTO engage, right? And the PTO can only be engaged by depressing the clutch, moving the lever and then releasing the clutch, right? How about the lift control? I assume the PTO must be engaged in order to use the lift control, but do I need to work the clutch when using the lift control as well?

I also noticed that you can not put the tractor in gear if the lift control is in a certain position - is this right? I think I understand the draft control on the right - should be straight up and down for anyhting but plowing, right?

I know these are basic questions and I am anxiously awaiting my manuals!

Ed,

Sounds like you have a 2N that has had BOTH the motor swapped for an 8N motor AND the lift cover/hydraulic pump swapped for the 8N position/draft control units. The guys tend to forget that you can swap the lift cover from a 8N with the one on a 9N/2N IF you also change the pump, since it is NOT as commonly done as the motor swap. The reason for the change of the pump is to match the control linkage from the cover down to the control valve on the pump.

Your tranny/steering column and differential with brake pedals on left and right, plus the large hubs, are all 9N/2N. If you can find some casting dates on those pieces, you might get a closer date to when the original tractor was assembled.

You should definitely check out John Smith's excellent site (click link below). It has a whole section on identification and differences between the various N models. Your serial number (if correct) indicates you have a 1947 8N. Are you sure all the numbers are showing? There are differences between the 47 & 48's radius rods & clutch linkages, so you should be able to pin it down. Also, if you crawl under the rear end there may be a casting mark stamped on the underside. I know some 8N's had these, but I can't recall when they started doing that.
9N's definitely do NOT have a position control lever so if yours does, I don't see how it could be a 9N.
Do a litle more checking and let us know.
I think you should be able to shift gears regardless of where the lift control is.

Sometimes, I confuse myself! I have the 9N/2N wheel pattern. Also, there is a brake pedal on the left and the right. The brake pedal on the left was converted to a hand operated brake lever. The serial number on the motor is clear with a star before and after the number. The transmission definitely has only three forward and one reverse. There is definitely a draft control lever on the right. I'll crawl around it a bit more today to look for any other casting marks.

If you have a draft control lever under right of seat then you may well have an 8N, not a 9N. The 8N would have 4 speeds forward while the 9N has only 3 forward. Check again and let us know what you have.

I definitely have only three forward speeds and the serial number on the motor is 8N3355. Maybe it's all 8N with a 9n transmission. Any other identifying signs at the rear end to tell?

The PTO lever is the one behind your left foot when you are on the tractor. The clutch must be depressed to engage/disengage the PTO. The PTO must be engaged to operate the lift control. You don"t need to use the clutch to operate the lift control.

The draft control, under your seat, (right cheek) should be strait up. You would only but it horizontal for plowing.

Yes you are correct, the lever on the left near the rear axle is the PTO lever. you have to operate the clutch to engage or disengage it. The pto must be running to operate the three point lift but you do not need to operate the clutch to lift or lower the 3 point. not sure about the draft control, didn't know that 9N's had that, thought only the 8N's did.
