I am interested in buying a Ford tractor (8N?). I would like live hydraulics and power steering. Wide frontend preferred. My question is what is the earliest year that had live power etc.? Thanks

As dan said.. a NAA ( 1953 ) will get you live hyds. If you want live pto.. you have to jump to 1955, and get a 660 or 860... power steering was -optional- on those units.. jump to 1958 and you may bery well see 661 and 861 with power steering more available. That said.. 2000-3000-4000 will also be more likely to have power steering.. but do check the specific model.. not all had live pto.. etc.

( so.. 660/860 or 661/861 with pow steering gets you close.. and are little more than a good 8n.. etc. )

It is relatively painless and inexpensive (less than $500) to add Live Hydraulics to any of the N-series tractors. Somebody also made a true live PTO for the N-series that added a lever-operated clutch in the drive line between the transmission and differential. This is probably a rare, hard-to-find item now. For most, an overrunning coupler on the PTO is all they need for safety. With all the linkage out in the open, power assist steering can also be added. But why bother? Unless your love affair with the 8N goes beyond all reason, if you want modern accessories, you need to be looking for a more modern tractor. By the time you get all those optional accessories working on an 8N tractor, you could have bought a newer thousand series and saved yourself a lot of time, labor, and money.

While I like Ns very much, I would recommend that you look at later years in the hundred series or even thousand series Fords. I have found them to be priced not that much higher than the Ns and lots of them came with your requirements.

Live hydraulics came with the 1953 NAA.

Now old - I have had this same discussion with you three times now :-) The 1953 "NAA" tractor was dubbed the "Jubilee" based on the biblical term "year of Jubilee" which occurs every 50 years - and 1953 was the 50th year for the Ford corporation. While it was dubbed the "Jubilee", it was still a NAA tractor (much like the 2003 Ford Cobra is dubbed the "Terminator", but it is still a Mustang Cobra). The NAA tractor was put out for 2 years, 1953 and 1954, but of course you can only have one year of Jubilee, so the 1954 NAA tractor dropped the name "Jubilee" and was just called a NAA. BOTH tractors are NAA tractors, BOTH tractors are identical except for the nose badge, you can correctly call BOTH years NAA tractors - but only the 1953 models you can correctly call a Jubilee.

I am copying this response to a text file on my computer to save me the trouble of typing it again the NEXT time you correct me on this issue (grin).

Just ribbing you,
Dan

I know Dan there the same but. I do what I do because theres to many people that say they have a 1954 Jubilee because if we don't tell them the whole story they will never learn what and all that a Jub is

Sorry old.. dan's got ya. The 1952-1952-1954 models of the NAA are all NAA... it's just that the aniversery year of 1953 they were dubbed 'jubilee'... If you will notice.. the sn prefix for all models is NAA.

All jubilee are naa.. all naa are not jubilee.. etc.

None of the 9N, 2N or 8Ns came out with live hyds. The Jubilee and new did. So that would make it 1953 or newer to have live hyds and some even had power steering and live PTO
