I've seen some mention of the 9n only having 3 speeds. Mine has a dual range trans giving me a low and high range. Is this an unusual feature for these tractors.

The Sherman Step-up (overdrive) was an option for 'roading' between plots. Not all that uncommon. The other types with the lo range were/are more popular. BTW....your tractor WILL go faster than is safe on an unsprung, 1/2 century old machine with that simple steering. Tractor SAFE.

Looks like a genuine 2n to me. Clues ? Oval radius rods, 9/2 hubs front and rear, 3 speed, gen cutout etc. My bet would be a 45 or 46. Nice handbrake as well. Enjoy

Did the 2N have a left and right side foot break just like the 9N? This one does.

Little..... ..yes, both the 9N & 2N have "straddle brakes". Meaning left foot for left brake, right foot for right brake. The 8N had side-by-side brake pedals, both operated by the right foot. By having sepparate brake pedals, you can "brake" the spinning tire and transfer all yer power to the non-spinning tire with traction. Also you can make very sharp 3-ft radius turns by locking one-brake..... ....Dell

Well after all the research and opinions from everyone on here, which I really appreciate by the way. I have to agree with you all that it's a 2N. Can you tell me from practical experience if there are any disadvantages or quirks I should know about? I plan to use for some blade work and a little mowing.

Thanks for the info, It sat up over the winter and the tubes busted and tires split. It runs good though and will move along at pretty good clip, faster than I care to drive it. Here are some photos taken tonight. It needs some TLC, tires, etc... I intend on restoring it but want to just use it a while first. I am beginning to think it may be a 2N or 8N with a 9N rear. I'm not sure, my uncle had mentioned he thought it was a hybrid or a mut. LOL
