About 3 years ago I was trying to start my 2n 6 volt with a low battery and old gasoline. I do know better but I still did a very dumb thing. Right after this happened I started reading YT mag. I hooked the 12 volt on my truck to the almost flat 6 volt on the 2-n. I knew I had a good connection because you should have seen the sparks. The second time I connected she BLEW. It sounded like a shot gun blast. A lot of the explosion went straight up. There were 3 of us standing there and we were all very lucky. A few minor acid burns and acid on my coveralls. I was very mad because I should have known better. I posted this because I wanted to remind everyone how many sparks you get when you hook 12 volts to 6 volts.

Years ago, a buddy was opening a can of "black powder" for someone else. My buddy only had a screwdriver to open the can. Well, the static electricity that my buddy had built-up carrying his screwdriver in HIS nylon coveralls was enough to create the powder to explode in his face. Later, my buddy decided to become a pilot for the powder company. Becareful with those old "black powder" type things.

Took me a decade or two to un-learn and re-learn but I have gone over to the the recommended procedure for connecting cables to a battery; ie, connect the ground last and connect it to whereever the battery is grounded. Do not connect that last cable to the battery. That way the spark is not on the battery or even near the battery, or the gas tank.

As for 12V to a 6V battery...no. You can juice the starter with 12V but you get 12V on the battery and you are juicing the ignition with 12V. Not a good idea.

I am really surprised that on this
YT site the advise was to connect
a 12 volt battery to a 6 volt battery.
The advice should always be to connect the 12 volt battery to the STARTER ONLY.
In this case the batteries are not
ever connected and the ignition still
works with 6 volts.

I've "preached" on this site, and others, from time to time, to be safe, use goggles, etc., when monkeying around with batteries, and typically folks just scoff at the advice, and even persist in pulling battery cables off while the engine is running, etc.

However, once folks actually experience a battery explosion, it usually gives them new-found respect for what can happen with batteries!

I have been lucky, the two battery explosions I have personally experienced have been in covered battery boxes. The unexpected "shotgun blast" will still about make you go change your undies, though!

Re: Battery explosion testimony in reply to B. Jones, 06-18-2006 19:26:17
Jonesy..... ...thank you for yer "explosive testimony". One of the "by-products" of lead-acid batterys is "hydrogen". Can you say Hindenburg and static electricity?.

When battery charging, always connect the battery charger FIRST, then turn the charger ON. And always use 6-volt chargers on 6-volt batterys and 12-volt charges on 12-volt batterys. They make'm that was for a reason..... .....respectfully, Dell

I just wanted people to know that it happened to me. By the way I did not have the motor on the truck running because I knew the current would flow without the truck running. Maybe this will save someone else from doing the same thing. I know now to put the cables straight to the starter and bypass the battery. I sure get a lot of information from this site. Thank you
