I have narrowed down the problem to the distributor. Every time I try to bolt the distributor on, the wire clip that holds the plate pops out. I am being careful to line up with the end of the cam before I start tighting the bolts. It tried to start yesterday, but wouldn't run on it's own. The rotor actually chiped and it was hitting on one cylinder. I can't figure out what happened. Could my cam be broken? But it does turn the rotor. I did monkey with the little timing screw, but returned it to center. Any help would be greatly appreciated.as she's been under a beech tree for two weeks. Rob J.

Rob. I've never heard of the spring popping off when tightening the two bolts. You say you are carefull in lining up the cam. I hope so, but it does sound that when tightening the bolts your putting stress on the distributor housing or the shaft resulting in the spring popping out.
Rotors are coming into this counry in all kinds of conditions. Several months ago I threw away 3 before I found one that would fit satisfactory. Some seem to fit very loose and others so tight they have to be forced on. Let us know what you find. Good Luck. Ron

Thanks for backing me up. Yes it does sound like I'm not lined uo correctly, but I am very careful to feel any resistance there. I will let you know. I wasn't feeling very good today, so my patience was challanged. I will prevail! Rob

I haven't hit the starter yet. As I mentioned, the spring pops out just as I start tightening the distro down. I did replace the bushings two years ago. I have all new gaskets now. I can't get the rotor cap on the distro when it's on the tractor. It's like it's not seating on the block evenly. It's as if the moving shaft is not in the groove and tightening makes the wire clip pop out. When I figure this out I will let you guys know what it was. Rob

Rob, It sound like the Centrifical advance has a problem. Do you have a "too-long" screw (points mounting) that is binding the Advance assy.

You need to remove the Plate & check the Advance for broken Spings Etc. The Shaft assembly will pull out once the points plate is removed

Hope this Helps,

I have taken apart and inspected the distributor closly. One thing I've noticed is that of the three rotors I have, they all fit at different heights. Two of them won't allow the cap to go on securely. Two came from a New Holland dealership. I don't know if special treatment is required in installing them. I've never had to that before. Rob

I am taking a WILD stab here with the little info you provided, but I would say your bushings are gone allowing the rotor to wobble, and needs to be replaced.

Anyone else?

Dan
