I have never worked on a Ford N series tractor before, so here is the question. The rotor will not rotate when the engine is cranking. I do not ave any books on the tractor as it is not mine, just trying to get it running for a woman I work with. What is the typical cause of this problem? Trying to get an idea before I just tear the tractor apart.
Thanks

It would be greatly helpfull if you told us if it was a front mount ignition or a side mount ignition.

Sorry, it is a front mount distributor. Thanks for the prompt reply.

Bewildered..... ....itza 2-bolt, 15-minute job to remove yer 4-nipple frontmount distributor to work on it on yer kitchen table. The distributor is driven by an "off-set" tang scheme so you don't haffta worry about re-timing upon re-installation. Simple, eh?

Just un-snapp yer 4-nipple cap and letter dangle and you don't haffta remove enny sparkie wires 'cuz neubies can't seem to gitt the firing order correct (1,2,4,3 CCW).

Re-installation, just finger start the 2-bolts and twirl the rotor until it dropps into the slotts; then tighten the bolts and re-snapp the capp. Simple, eh?

Points gap is a skinny 0.015" and timing (1/4" gap) is usually ok after changing the points; so don't worry too much there. Timing is a complicated procedure best described by pictures.

Make certain yer squarecan coil bottom springy-thingy is gently stretched so it securely touches the points screw when clamped onto the top of the distributor body.

As to yer claim of rotor not turning, are you sure? Iff'n you didn't seat it fully on distributor shaft, you may have mucked up yer 4-nipple capp. Check-itt..... ...Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

I finally pulled the distributor to check and the camshaft is not turning. So I removed the governor to check the gear and all the teeth are gone off of the camshaft. There are no bolts in the camshft gear so I will guess it is pressed on. Can I purchase just the gear and press it on? Or do I have to purchase the entire camshaft and lifters?
Thanks

Bewildered..... ...BUMMER..... ..yep, old bakelite camshaft gears are gittin way past their lifetime. Ford used bakelite in their auto engines for "quietness" which many equate with "quality". Dunnno why tractors?

Yes, you can buy replacement bakelite camshaft gears that PRESS-ON but I DON'T RECOMMEND it because you have NO-WAY to index yer camshaft to the camgear and your engine will be OUTTA-TIME and NOT RUN.

Byte the bullett and gitta replacement camshaft with 4-bolt timing gear.

CAUTION: some of the 4-bolt timing gears are "miss-marked" and iff'n you don't check the valve timing with the piston TDC before you gitt the head back on, you won't be able to start yer engine and yer compression will be 50-70psi. It is a NOTICABLE visable miss-timing, not a micrometer kinda thing. You'll be off a couple of gear teeth..... ...HTH, Dell
