How do you go from a 12v battery to a 6v coil ? I got some reducers from the local parts store here in town. But it said that I need to know what is my amp draw on the circuit. I was told a while back that I need 3v with the points closed and 6v with them open how do you wire something like this up?

Bob..... .the answer is....about 3 amps.

You need to go back to Electronics 101 or Basic Electricity 101 and look up "Ohms Law".

If'n you are electrically challenged, then STOP, and do a search in the archives at the top of this great N-Board and read all about the woes of converting the frontmount 6 volt to 12 volts.

3 volts at the coil terminal of a 6 volt frontmount coil occures because of the infamous "ballist resistor" mounted on the backside of the dashboard.

The trick is to wire up a 12 to 6 volt dropping resistor in series (like flashlight batterys) with the ballast resistor and then the frontmount ignition coil will have the correct volts and will not burn out.

If'n done correctly, you should read about 3.5 (2.5 min, 4.0 max) volts at the 6 volt coil terminal with the points closed and battery volts with the points open.

I'm a 12 volt advocate for the right reasons, and so far I haven't found the right reasons for my eazy starting 6 volt 52 8N and I know how to do it right..... ..Dell

Get a Chrysler ballast resistor(ceramic block with a coiled fine wire from one end to the otehr) and wire it in the primary wire that goes to the coil. Or get a 12 volt coil.
