I started a new post because the other one was so long. I also own a 2N with a generator like yours. I forgot to check it today but If i remember right that SCREW is not supposed to turn a complete turn. I know on the low side it does not charge very much at all. If I turn mine to the High side, it will charge around 10 amps that is with the motor revved up some. I wonder if your screw is connected properly inside the generator and moving the 3rd brush like it should. Maybe someone else will log in but I don"t think the screw should turn that much. I think the screw hits a stop after I turn it so far. Did yours stop or just keep turning? I repeat on High it should get to almost 10 amps on the meter. Let us know what you find out. You may still need brushes.

Thanks for the suggestion. The screw did turn an awfully lot. That was a question in my mind but I didn't know how much it would adjust. I'll check that out next week. Maybe that's the biggest problem.

When I got my old model 8N it had a generator.
About every 3 months I had to trade it in for a rebuilt one $65.
I said this ain't gonna werk!!
I went to an alternator re-builder shop in my town, I asked can you make me a positive ground, 6 volt Chevy one wire alternator?
He said yes but it would take him 2 days to get the parts, and I had to furnish the alternator.
I said how much, he said $65 bucks.
I said you got a deal.
When I went to pick it up I paid him $65, he said don't tell anyone about this, because I can't do it at that price again.
It has been running faithfully with no problems for close to 20 years.

They actually have a kit to convert a Delco alternator from 12V to 6V at the following link, bottom of the page. Don't know if it works or is hard to do. Anyone out there ever tried it? A little pricey, but considering all the trouble people have with their 12V conversions it might make sense for some people. (but, Tractor Gal,, it would be better for you to get your genny fixed up if it needs it than to go this route. It would be a last resort).
