Soluble grease for oil pump?

I see references in the archives to "soluble grease" or "engine rebuild grease" to put in the oil pump so it will prime correctly after it's replaced.

I went into the auto parts store and stared blankly at the selection of grease. Nothing like this was available.

I asked the local salespeople and got the usual blank stare back.

Can someone help me find this stuff?

I have literally rebuilt hundreds of engines, and like others, have my own preferences. - - - - - - - If the engine will be fired and run immediately, I like to use a 50/50 mixture of STP and motor oil as an assembly lube. I use straight STP on rod and crank bearings, cam bearings, cam lobes and lifters. I pack the oil pump with Vaseline. - - - - - - - - If the engine is being assembled over a period of time, or will sit awhile before being run, I prefer to use the Lubriplate white lithium grease on rotating parts, and straight STP on rings/pistons. The oil pump gets packed with Vaseline. - - - - - - - As someone pointed out, the white greases do not "dissolve" or melt readily, and may take several oil changes before they are removed from the engine. IMHO, the grease may get into the filter and hinder the free flow of oil. However, the grease will not "drain" off parts if the engine lays dormant during an extended assembly/installation. - - - - - - - Vaseline is petroleum based and readily melts at operating temperatures. It does not function well as an assembly lube, and I only use it to quickly estblish prime in the oil pump. - - - - - - - - - My 2 cents!

Many types of grease or oil will serve the purpose. You are basically helping everything stay lubricated until the pump primes and pressures up the system. My favorite over the years has been white lithium or Lubriplate. I used it recently on an N motor and packed the pump with it. Worked fine. I have torn car engines down after 30k miles and still found traces of it. Just my opinion.

Engine rebuild grease is available almost everywhere including Walmart. The last stuff I had was white and came in a tube like toothpaste.

Use vaseline in the oil pump though...

Vaseline is the best way

You can safely pack the oil pump with vaseline. It
will desolve once the oil starts flowing. As for
the rest of the engine I would use an engine
assembly lube but sounds like your parts house
doesn't have any. You might try a machine shop
that specializes in engine rebuilds. I have used
and know people that use bearing grease, not the
thick kind, but the black molybdenum disulphide.
That you might find at a local parts house.

I have been told to use STP oil on rebuild parts. I would like to hear comments on this if it ia a good or bad thing. Tom

I use straight STP in the oil pump and 50-50 STP and 30 wt as assembly lube. I have never had a problem on the several engines I have rebuilt. I picked up the idea from an article on Traco engineering who builds racing engines.

Good Luck

I've heard this too, but I don't think it will help the oil pump prime, and I thought that was the purpose of packing the pump with grease.

In the engine rebuild video, they coat most of the parts with oil, and I think they mention STP.
