How hard is it to just replace the piston rings in an 8N? Any special tools required?

I guess I kind of fall between Old and Dunk on this. To drop the oil pan, you have to take off the front axle and roll it away, so that's kind of a big deal -- at least, it was to me. You might have already known that, of course, but it took me a while to realize the front axle is bolted to the front of the oil pan. :-)

And I guess the other thing that might be said is to think about why you want to replace the rings and/or not work on anything else while you're in there. Is it because of burning oil or low compression readings or...? It seems to me that I've seen lots of people on the forum start to think about doing something, and then talk about why they want to do it, and then a really interesting conversation develops that helps them figure out a little better what they really should do and in what order -- including some more diagnostics and stuff.

I hope you don't think I'm suggesting you don't know exactly what you're doing to figure to replace the rings, because I'm sure you do. But I know I'm kind of a dunderhead on these things and so I always try to throw in some ideas that would have been (and were, in fact) useful to me when I started working on my engine. I hope this helps!

Dawn

Not all that bad a job. You do need to drop the pan and also take the head off. Tools you need and I'll probably miss one or 2. Ridge reamer, hone, ring compressor, and torque wrench and of course the normal hand tools. But if you also don't check the crank and a few other things you may just be throwing your money away.

Ridge reamer? on an 8N?

What for?

There is only one way to to rebuild an 8N, do it right sleeves, pistons, valves, guides, the whole 9 yards, $500 or so for the complete kit, 20+ more years of the engine giving service.

You do need to know what the size of the sleeves are, and if the crank is standard, most machine shops will check this for nearly nothing.

While you have the engine off, be sure to replace the front seal in the trans, very cheap and very worth it.

Dunk, NOTE he said replace the rings, I.E. not rebuild the engine so yes a radge reamer is needed. Now ya if he was rebuilding it then no it isn't need and the hone isn't needed either

Sorry..

I guess ringing a *N and not replacing the sleves, and rebuilding it is just does not enter into my world.

I can't even imagine it.

I bought my tractor around 1983, we was pore folks, the fellow I bought it from thought is was junk, I rebuilt the engine then.

I just did it last year again.

I have abused it to no end.

1948 8N SN: 8N *236763*

Bush hogged anything it would push or ride down, gave it *hell* for all them years.

Plowed, plowed, and plowed.

moved mountians with the all purpose plow and a scrape blade.

I feel that re-ringing it is a disrespect.

Again

Sorry.

To this day I have never owned an ORC, and in the last few months I bought a lift leveler, something I have never had till then.

Still that tractor is a loved one.

Dunk, also if you read my whole post that I put in hours ago you could also see I don't believe in just putting rings in because if thats all that is done it will lead to spending a lot more money down the road. Some how if you pull a rod cap off and don't have the crank checked etc. you are in for trouble. Now as far as an ORC I would never use a brush hog with out one unless you have a live PTO which I know your tractor doesn,t. But I also don't use a tractor to brush hog with out it have a live PTO, but I do have a good number of tractors right now. Shoot if I drove one every day and only one then wnet to the next one it would take me all month just to drive them all. LOL

The only tractor I have ever owned is this '49 8N.

It is my friend, and it is my kid.

It has took care of me and I of it.

I understand that folks can't understand that.

It is personal to me how you work on them.

What the 2 of you can do together, is up to the operator, and the tractor.

I know it don't make good sense, at least to some folks.

Just like these days, folks go to the grocery store, and pay what they can get by with for harmone fed, fast grown off prepaired meat.

Talk to folks, even the family, about harvesting one, and they freek out!! (I have rabbits I feed, chickens, turkeys) They don't want to eat wild game, but they will eat this man made meat groth harmone stuff...

60 years the world isn't what my grandpa knew, and taught me it was 45 years ago.

Now what gives??

Sorry, I just posted my heart.

Bless you brother.

Dunk, You ever go to my web site?? We have horses, goats, chickens, ducks, and geese. I spent this past weekend sighting in the guns for deer saeson which starts Saturday. I put in a garden each year and now can a good bit of stuff we grow. The only fertilizer I use if from the animals and I don't use any bug spray etc on my plants. If its not here I don't use it. I figure the best way to gorw some thing is to use what we have and I do have a lot of it LOL. I have wheat growing in the garden area right now and will till it under in the spring. I'll also probably add another 6inches or so of manure this spring.

I have this serious adversion to web sites that have music on them, I have my very good reasons most folks can't imagine.

Sometimes I nearly get caught looking at the porn sites when I forget to mute the computer first.
The ole lady comes looking like what the hell.

Women screaming and moaning..

Well thats my story, and I am sticking to it.
