Is there a media out there that is safe to use? Is "play sand" safe or does it contain the bad stuff too? I just got a new blasting cabinet and don"t want to kill myself. Thanks for your time!!!

Rob

I have worked with several types of blast equipment- Co2 or ice blast cleaning is the best for cleaning if you do not need a specific profile for repainting. It does not always give you a white metal blast. Can be costly as well.

I've seen pictures posted on this site of assembled tractors sitting on jackstands being sand blasted to remove paint and rust. How do you keep the dust and sand from getting inside the engine, transmission and other areas that would be hurt by abrasives?

Inside the shop and around machines and high price tooling, we used ice.

I was told coal slag is safe to use with a cheap resperator. I have used it in my cabinet and outside. It works good. Cheap, too. HTH

You don't want to breathe a large amount of anything you blast with. Anything with silica (play sand or any other sand) seems to be the worst for the human body. I guess plastic media would cause less dust and walnut hulls at least would be organic. Soda would probably be the most enviromentally friendly if you were blasting outside the cabinet. I find that glass beads work for most applications. Heavy rust responds to aluminum oxide. Even in the cabinet, you should have a vacuum to evacuate the dust so you can see inside the cabinet and at least filter out most of the dust. Check eastwood.com for types of blasting media and what they are best suited for. Hope this helped.
