In the new block I just bought, there is a hole in the side/top that is not present in my old block.

I took a picture but forgot my camera, so I'll do my best to describe it.

From the driver's viewpoint, it's just rear of the oil connection behind the valve covers. It looks like it has a 1/4" screw hole next to it, like it's for some sort of access hatch to the ring gear.

It's not present at all in my old 48 frnt-mnt block. Any idea what this is?

If it bothers you put a cork in it and paint it red. 80)

Hi Rob,
If I am not mistaken, it's a hole to see the timing marks on the flywheel. It came along on the later blocks. I believe it had a steel tab you could swivel out of the way on the screw. If I am wrong someone will correct me.

This makes complete sense. It has a bit of an indentation surrounding the threaded screw hole and the big hole over the ring gear that looks like a cover plate would fit into it perfectly.

While I order a replacement cover, it is safe to run the engine with no cover here? I wouldn't USE the tractor in the field, but I don't want this part to hold up testing my new engine.

I have the same "hole" and it isn't an issue without the cover. Mine never came with it.

I s'pose I should call Don to see if he carries one.

I don't see why you couldn't. I don't think the block will mind a bit.(-;
