As I put my new engine back together, should I use gasket sealant on all the gaskets? Do you apply it to both sides of the gasket?

I read that the head gasket shouldn't get gasket sealant, so I know that's the exception. But I have about 20 other gaskets.

Gasket sealer is kind of like motor oil. Everybody has a preference and a story about uncle Georges '49 Chevy. What I would do for sure is put some kind of sealer on the threads of any bolt--especially head bolts--that go into coolant.

Your mileage may vary

I just replaced the transmission pan gasket on my car, and I used a gasket sealer in combination with the gasket. WRONG idea!!!! It leaked everywhere. So, I called the trans. shop, and they said when you use sealer with a tranny gasket, it just makes the gasket squish out and does no good! They said to put the gasket on dry. Just my $.02

Is this what I should do around the oil pan seal? It has a nice hefty gasket.

I use permatex spray gasket sealer on gaskets that have to seal against oil. Its red in color. You spray it on the gasket and let it dry. It seals but doesn't stick to either surface. You can reuse the gaket many times. Really good for pan and valve cover gaskets.

Good Luck

If the mating surfaces are clean and not gauged, then you will not need any sealant. I use it in areas where it helps to hold the gasket in place, such as water pump and valve covers...

I used the sealant on almost everything because I didn't want any "comebacks". Exceptions: head gaskets and carb gaskets. My $.02
