The pickup tube on my oil pump is loose and needs to be replaced (from what I read here).

When I get a new one, is friction fit enough? How should I attach it to the oil pump housing? The archives suggest silver solder, epoxy, and brazing. I think the oil pump cover plate is cast iron? Anything special I need to know about soldering the new one into place?

I agree with Salmoneye, either silver solder or braze your old tube back on. Whether it comes off again is a factor of how well it's put on, not how old it is. If you fear not being able to do a good job, take it to a welding shop and let them do it, can't imagine that being very expensive. Sure better than spending $150. Make the check out to me for $0.02.

I would sure as heck try and solder the one you have back together first before paying $150...

If you read the stories in the archives about the horror of a tube falling off while the tractor is running, I am not so sure.

Anyway, at this point the N's been down for a month and a half. I need my tractor running again.

I should have called the local dealer before I posted -- apparently the cover plate and pickup tube are sold as one assembly.

Sticker shock: $150

I haven't come across anything yet that J&B weld won't bond for keeps. The guy that told me about it used it to weld an engine block on an old chevy truck. That was 5 years ago and he still drives it.

Mark, not to argue, but for jbweld to work correctly requires a clean surface. That is not likely on a part that is in the bottom of a n crankcase. FWIW
