I need help finishing the wiring on my '51 8N side mount distributor. I still need to wire up the alternator, coil, and ammeter. I greatly appreciate it if you can help me connect the dots. Many thanks.

Neil R's diagram... in reply to Rob G, 12-10-2006 18:53:21
There's no need to "re-invent the wheel"... here's a diagram that's been around for a while:

If you are determined to use the (goofy) one-wire alternator, simply OMIT the #1 and #2 terminals on the alternator, and their associated wiring.

Consider the wire connected to the coil as connected to the coil's (+) terminal, and connect the (not shown) (-) terminal to the distributor.

OR ditch the "one wire" alternator, and get a STANDARD 3-wire alternator, and connect it up as shown in the diagram. A diode can be substituted for the "marker light", if you don't want an "idiot light" or the hassle of mounting it.

Hey thanks. What's the detail on the ammeter? Is it a pass thru from one terminal to the other or everything wired on the same post?

If you have an original induction ammeter, it will have a loop on the back that the wire from the solenoid to the terminal block simply passes through. If you have a shunt-type ammeter, it will have 2 terminals. If it happens to read backwards, swap the wires from between the 2 terminals.

(If you have an induction ammeter, and it reads backwards, reverse the direction in which the wire passes through the loop.)

Thanks. Have you wired one up this way before?

Nope! I wouldn't convert to 12V unless I had a 12 Volt reason.

BTW: You could wire G to D (instead of G to B)
and that would "physically" make D the Battery load center for lights etc. B & D are the same potential electrically but it just makes it easy to understand.

Note: The Ammeter may be incorrectly marked but
that does not harm the ammeter and can be corrected (swap A & B) if its reversed.
