howdy-I spent 6hours today digging a 8n out of an overgrown briar patch, also had acouple of small trees growing up around it.As I tried to drag it out the back wheels wouldnt turn which I later discovered was froze up rear brakes, they eventually broke free after dragging it around the yard a few times. My question is this-where do I start?I dont want a show piece, just something that will crank and run.I noticed it wouldnt go into gear, seems to be stuck in netural. It has been sitting outside for about 3 years, any suggestions would be appricated.Lastly, what is this thing worth,I bought the tractor, plow, harrows and bushhog for 300.00-thank you

I'll ask the same question that was asked of me after MY last 'steal-of-a-deal'. Did you wear a mask?

Wow - implements alone are worth more than $300 - tractor is better than free!!! In addition to unsticking the engine and the shifter rails as recommended below, I would drain the hydraulic system, just in case it has water in there and you're in freezing teritory - not good for the pump.
Hope you get'er running - come back for more advice when she's all unstuck.

300 FOR ALL THAT!
Ok here in Virginia we call that stealing!
if the impliments are any good at all they are worth every penny of 300. If there is any hope for the tractor at all it is more than well worth 300 alone.

Prices around here seem to start at around $500 just for the tractor. Good rear tires and an engine that will start usually pushes the price over $1000. What OLD said about the tranny fluid in the cylinders may save you a lot of initial damage when you try to get it to turn over. Might be too late already since you don't know what kind of shape it was in when they parked it.

Sounds like you did ok. As far as where to start I would fill the cylinders with tranny fluid. Drain out the oil in the engine, tranny etc and put new back in since they all probably have water in them. The stuck tranny is probably stuck shifter rails so you may have to take the top off the tranny.

Its the same place I always start at with any engine that I know hasn't been turned over in months/years and I don't know the condition of it. I figure it can never hurt the engine but of cousre you never know for sure if it will help but its always worth a try. LOL. I also figure for $2 a QT its better then useing MMO which is more like $6 a QT
