I know this is off toppic but about 3 years ago my wife took a group of people to Washington, D.C. They were walking through Arlington National Cemetery when my wife decided to sit down on one of the benches. Her wallet slipped out of her pocket on the bench. Later she knew where she lost it but it was too late. She canceled her credit cards etc. About 5 days later when she was back home in Missouri, her wallet came in the mail. The $200 was still there along with everything else. The man from California that found it , didn't even use any of her money to send it back. He is one great person. I know that Many of the people that are on this forum would do the same thing . Have a great day. B. Jones

I drove from Indianapolis, IN to Marion, IL once and thought I forgot my wallet once I got there. When I had to use a friend’s credit card to buy gas I looked down and it was sitting on the back bumper of my 2500HD. TRUE STORY!!! It had my badge, credit cards, ID, vacation cash and everything in it. Losing it would have meant at least a 7 day suspension.

Many years ago, when I was in college, I would sometimes work on the docks in Portland, Oregon, as casual labor. This work was often driving new cars off the ships. One night, I was unloading new Hondas and at the end of the shift I noticed my back pocket was ripped nearly off my jeans, and my wallet was missing. No way to know if it was on the ship, in the parking lot, or what.

Months later, when I was back in school, my dad (full time longshoreman, now retired) returned my wallet to me. Everything was intact, including cash and an un-cashed paycheck! The wallet had traveled to Japan on the ship and back to Portland. The crew had turned it in to the Longshoreman's union hall. Since my last name is unusual, my dad was the only union member with the same name.

The amazing (and encouraging) thing about this story is the long chain of honest folks who handled my wallet and got it back to me.

Joe

Re: even more OT--Things on top of cars in reply to B. Jones, 12-13-2006 19:52:29
Reading the two stories about things left on top of car's (Eric's mom's bible and the lady's purse) made me think of something that happened to my mother when I was 7 years old. She went out to the grocery store that was about a half mile away, pretty much all but the last stretch on residential roads, in our white 1960 Chevy - tail fins and all. (You've gotta' have the mental picture for this.) She said people who passed her kept giving her really odd looks, and she couldn't figure out why. So then she pulled into the little strip mall where the grocery store was and passed the big store windows along the front of the TG&Y (remember those?) and suddenly saw the car's reflection there. My pet cat -- long-haired, gray and white "mutt" cat -- was sitting on the roof of the car in the middle front, posed regally, with the light breeze of her speed blowing back the fur around his neck! She said she just kept right on going without stopping, all the way back home. When she got there, he jumped off casually. She said she never just got in the car without looking again! :-)

Lost Wallet while Tractoring in reply to B. Jones, 12-13-2006 19:52:29
I make a practice of removing my wallet
and putting it in a drawer. Even when
driving locally it stays there. As a result
I haven't lost it yet while on my 9N.
A friend of mine has lost his wallet 3
times in his field. Only found it twice.
Tractors are sometimes expensive.

I am glad to hear that your wife got her stuff back. unfortunately the credit cards had already been canceled so the nightmare was still at least partially there. A couple of years ago I found a purse on the road at the entrance to my subdivsion. I picked it up and found that it contained checks, credit cards, cash, makeup, tampons etc.. The checks and drivers license had a street address but no where to be found was a phone number. I went to the womans house but no one was home. I knew that when she noticed it gone she would cancel the cards etc.. but had no way to contact her. I took the purse to the local police department and explained where I found it. Aparently they did figure out how to get a hold of her and all worked out well. She sent a gift box of cheese and crackers to my house (unnecassary but I would have done at least the same). So how did the purse end up there one might ask? Simple, like so many other people, she sit it on top of her car, got in and forgot the purse. On the first good corner the purse slid off and she was lucky that I, instead of some dishonest person found it. I guess there are 2 lessons here.

1. Never sit anything on top of your car. not only does it damage the paint but you could forget its there and drive off.

2. put your contact telephone number somewhere in your purse, wallet etc. I don't know if this one is a good idea or not, but at least I could have contacted her.

Just the other day stopped by a bank that I don't do business at to use their automated teller. There is a truck in front of me driving away from the machine as I pull up. Before I can stick my card in, I notice that the previous persons transaction hasn't ended. Being unfamiliar with the teller machine at this bank I thought to myself I'll wait and see how long this thing takes to "close". It was asking if I "wanted another transaction". After a few minutes of staring at this screen waiting to be able to insert my card I decided to push the "yes" button. Lo and behold, it took me to the menu to make a withdraw. It was at this time I realized that the previous person's card was still in the machine. I promplty hit the "cancel" button and the machine spit out the card. I then drove immediately around and went into the bank to turn in the card. I had to drive back around to do my transaction.

Now, if you forget to take your card out after completing the transaction and the machine ejects the card, the teller machines will confiscate the card within a few minutes when left in the slot.

With this card left in waiting for another transaction, I have no idea how long this persons card would've stayed active in the machine. I'm just assuming the person prior to me left the card...

I found a wallet once on a university campus. I looked up the owner in the phone book and arranged to meet them at the local coffee shop. They met me there, looked at their wallet, and accused me of stealing the 50 bucks that was no longer in it. ggggrrrrr rrr.

It won't slip out so easily, and pickpockets have to give me a thrill first. ;Þ
