While riding thru the wilds of McDowell county, NC Saturday I saw a 8N with a implement I did not know. It was spinning in the mowed grass and appeared to be some kind of hayrake. It looked like 2 eggbeaters pointing down at the ground, but with tines or fingers that skated along just skimming the mown hay, but not really doing anything like making a bale.

What is that dang deal?

Bert..... I believe that grass raker is commonally called a "tedder". It is suppost to be more "gentle" on the mown hay and not knock off the leaves, which is where the nutrition of the hay is, not in the stems..... Dell

Sounds like a tedder to me.
Around here they would have been going full tilt and the hay would have been flying behind.
Instead of just turning the hay over or making winrows like a hay rake, a tedder tosses the hay and speeds drying by exposing more to the air when it lands.
We then used to go through with the rake the next morning, make winrows and then bale in the afternoon.

But I may be wrong :-)

If it was a tedder, which I believe it is you are right.
