Hello all, I just picked up a 9N serial number 137891. At least that is what is stamped into the block. On the left of these pages I find that this is a 1944 model; OK that's fine. I also see that there were about 90,000 9N's built. Wait a minute!!
If there were 90,000 built why do the serial numbers run as high as mine? Even if mine were the very last 9N ever that would leave about 35,000 units left over. That would seem to be too many for replacement parts. Did they skip serial numbers? Have I read my number incorrectly? I read somewhere that an "I" was used as a "1" and that is very clearly what the last digit is.
BTW she is nearly complete although not nearly running. The farmer modifications have been minimal. I already have a working tractor so this one will likely be retired to the show ring.

Thanks, that clears up the mystery with the serial numbers.
Sorry, pictures are above my pay grade! Maybe someday though. If it helps, imagine a forlorn gray hunk of steel with one flat tire, a water bottle for an air cleaner and the tread on one rear tire reversed.
The radius rods are the I-beam type.

9N"s were built from 1939-1943(ser.#1-105412)----- 2N'swere built from 1942-1947 (ser.#99003-258504)----- -8N'swere built from 1947-1952 (ser.#1-442035). A 2N will have 9N part numbers everywhere on it even though it is a 2N. One necessary book for the owner of one of these tractors is the I&T FO-4 Shop Manual. Ye can get one of these at Tractor Supply Stores, this site, and most New Holland Dealers and other tractor dealers. It will run you from $20-$30 at most places, but well worth the money. Just be sure to get the 152 page version, some smaller ones exist with less information in them.

It is a 2N and the year is 44", I am curious the radius rod is round or is the "I" beam style ? The round type change in the 44" mid year , hope you have a "I" beam . Pre 1944 = superior steel .

You're right that it's a 1944, but that's technically a 2N, not a 9N. Yes, the parts are all stamped "9N" (so are many of the parts on my 8N), but those made between 1944 and 1947 are 2Ns (as are some of the ones made between 1942 and 1944).

Show us a picture if you've got one! I'd love to see it!
