I was reading through the forum about the aftermarket gaskets that go on the 8N hydraulic pump. I was concerned when I read the post about some of the gaskets being too thin and not allowing the pump to go back in. I purchased my gasket set from this forum, Will these gaskets cause the same trouble. Anyone else use gaskets bout from this forum? I have not reinstalled my pump yet just wondering before I go throuh the trouble, only to have to take the pump apart again?

The gasket kit I bought from this forum is Tisco and I called and talked to the parts dept for this forum and they told me they have never had a single occurance related to these gaskets that they sell. I am just going to go back together and see what happens. Maybe it is just an individual tractor or pump problem and does not affect all 8N's we will see.

If the gasket kit you got from here was made by Tisco - you will have a problem. I am the one that discovered this and posted it up, since then, the parts supplier in NC has verified this. They no longer carry these and has moved to another supplier whose gaskets are thicker. Also - the individual gaskets at New Holland are the correct thickness.

Dan

Dan I have the same question as Tom. I have a gasket already and want to put back in this weekend, Do you have any idea what thickness the "good" gasket is? Thanks

Charlie I live in the neighborhood, Chelsea just south west of midtown. My tractor lives in the catskills and I get to visit on weekends! Where are you?

No way! I work right on top of Penn Station; live in Washington Heights near the Cloisters. My tractor, unfortunately lives at my parent's farm in Kansas. Unfortunately, I only get out there 4-5 times a year.

Dan, what problem does it cause? I have a spare pump built up and waiting but I'm not sure if it is Tisco or not. Any idea what the correct thickness measurement is? Thanks

Tom....just measured both.Tisco=.020 thick. Our brand=.030.So, double the diff and you get.020 diff in the two brands. That's not much, but it will hit.The fix with Tisco gaskets is a couple swipes with a file or dremel tool on the pto shifter housing,or the chambers,or just use two gaskets on each side. don b

Not sure of the actual thickness, sorry. What I do know, is the Tisco gasket was too thin, and it allows the valve side covers to sit closer to the pump body. The PTO shifter ears fit between these two side covers and there is not much clearance. Since the side covers come closer to the pump body, there is not enough room to slide the PTO shifter ears in between when you go to put the pump into the tractor. You need to either get thicker gaskets, double up on the gaskets, or shave some material off the ends of the PTO shifter ears.

The original gasket I scraped off my pump was very thick, black, and had fibers in it. The replacement from New Holland was green paper - not as thick as the original but thick enough to clear the PTO shifter ears. Also - like I said in the earlier post, my supplier in NC now has the correct gaskets, this site may very well also.

HTH,
Dan

"Fibers" sure is a NICE word for asbestos!

Wow - that is not good. Why would they put asbestos in a low heat environment? Was it used for other functionality besides heat resistance?

It used to be VERY common to use asbestos fibers in gaskets, for use around heat OR pressure, and I have no doubt that's what you were seeing in your old gaskets.

Dan, asbestos also has extremely high tensile strength and is resistant to damage from chemicals. Backin the day you would find it all over your house. It was found in insulation, shingles, floor tile, and cement board used as siding. It made an extremely reliable gasket resistant to tearing, oils, and all sorts of abuse.

Ive heard the space shuttle blew up because asbestos was removed from the seals in the fuel containment.

Not true. The O-rings got too stiff in cold weather and would not seal the solid rocket cases properly.
