2N Won't Start

I have a 1947 2N that I purchased last October. It has started and ran perfect till this week. Last week I used it to plow snow with about 2hrs. of seat time. Tried to start it yesterday, the 6V battery was near dead, charged it for several hours, I can crank it over and it would fire but the starter bendix kicks out before all four plugs can fire but it won't continue to run.

Is this just because the battery is not strong enough to turn the engine fast enough to keep up when it begins to fire?

Could there be something wrong with the starter or bendix?

Thanks in advance for everyone's insight and help.

Done my share of plowing snow on a 2N. Two thoughts. First battery is weak and things are cold, and maybe wet. Bad combo. Have the battery tested (6 volts are a pain in the a$$) or charge it good and try jumping. Starter kicks out a lot during hard starting. I don't know why but not uncommon.

Also the front mount distributor gets a lot of snow blow by from the standard pull fan. Sometimes wires and cap get wet from snow melting on hot places. Wipe it down with alcohol rag.

Good Luck!

Autoxman,
I had the same thing happen to mine yesterday night when I went to push some snow around.

Hoping I just gassed the plugs and nothing worse (itchie choke fingers),
I swapped out the plugs back to previously torched and cleaned Champions from the current flooded Autolite 437's.

Fired up great (after I re-charged the battery). Got two of the Auto's swapped back in one atta time per Dell's advice long ago. Get the last two in next time I run her.

Good luck,
-Chad

Autoxman..... ..you write..... "I can crank it over and it would fire but the starter bendix kicks out before all four plugs can fire but it won't continue to run..... ..cold engines are like that, when was the last time you did a tune-up?

Is this just because the battery is not strong enough to turn the engine fast enough to keep up when it begins to fire?..... ..no, but a warm fully charged battery is to be recommended.

Could there be something wrong with the starter or bendix?..... .yep, bad bendix

Heres the deal, bendix screw gotta be squeekie clean or it will grind ...and... the velocity sensitive engagement pawls gotta be un-worn. Just the slightest increase in starter drive turning velocity from 1-sparkie firing will release the anti-screwback pawls and yer bendix drive will un-screw. Only cure is NEW bendix.

Recommend the new modern "clutch" style (hint: read more expensive) bendix drive. Replacement old fashioned bendix screw drive requires you to drill a new starter keeper hole in starter shaft. Clutch type does NOT new hole.

TIP: gently clamp yer starter motor UPSIDE-DOWN in vise and use yer left armpit to press down on starter gears to release split-pin keeper pressure so you can use a punch and hammer to drive-out keeper. For re-installation, grind a slight point on split-pin keeper for easier insertion with punch and hammer. Simple, eh?..... ..Dell

It's not yer starter, Bendix.

Forgit that!!

If yer starter turns it over, good to go.

Now yer battery may be weak enough that it can't keep the spark up while powering the starter too.

But for the time being I am discounting that too.

I think you have it flooded...(gassed yer plugs)

Easiest fix for this is clean new plugs.

You can make the ones that are gassed good again by heating them with a torch, or swapping them in and out after you have her running again.

What kind of plugs are you running in your tractor?

It has the Champion H10C sparkies. Need to get some Autolite plugs. Picked up a new battery tonight, put that in tomorrow, old batt was old.

Dunk, left the fuel petcock open when i came inside and plugs are NOW wet, don't know if they were wet before.

As per the board get some Auto-lite 437 spark plugs. Clean your battery connections when you install the new battery, all four (even the new battery posts), and give it a whirl. Post back when you get it all done. It should start right up for you. My 8N is easy to flood and I have come up with a simple rule for my particular tractor. If its under 50F I can choke it to start. If its above 50F, no choke at all and it starts. I'm lucky, I just touch my start button and its running.

Good luck.

Recharge the bat.. pay attention to water in it.

Clean your electrical connections.. all of em.

Take a piece of brown grocery sack and pull it between the points 4-5 times.

Pull your s-plugs and make sure they aren't fouled.. clean, regap and replace.

Start her up with a bit of choke and 2/3 throttle and see what she gives you.

"Take a piece of brown grocery sack and pull it between the points 4-5 times."

Many times, not having a brown grocery sack handy, I have used a dollar bill for that.

If you have a new-ish one.. (crisp)that works good.. the old ones don't seem to work.. once they get soft.. etc.
