I posted yesterday that I couldn't get my 2N started. I installed a new battery, 1 gauge negative cable and Autolite plugs, then turned it over, it caught but sputtered and chugged, so I let it run like that. It sounded like the RPMs were about 100 revs, I played with the throttle trying to get it rev faster for about ten minutes with it spitting black smoke and gas, finally I shut the fuel off and it ran for another minute then sped up and stalled. I started it again and it ran a bit faster, I let it run till it was at operating speed.

I then took it out to play in the snow for about 40 minutes, it ran great!!!

Thank you for all your advice and insight. I did get a tune-up kit and coil, but I'm going to wait until the temperature is north of freezing to tackle that.

Yes Dunk, I did gas the plugs! Thanks

With each new tractor "adventure" we gain a little more. Amazing how many things it could be... and in the solving.... we learn.

AutoxmaN, that black smoke ye are talking about is a sure sign of too rich a fuel mixture. Adust ye carburetor fuel flow screw to improve this. This will be done by turning the idle adjusting screw. It will be the screw just behind where ye gas line goes into the carburetor. It lays at about a 45* aangle and has a spring around it. Turning the needle in reduces the air volume and enriches the mixture, so ye will notice improvement by turning it out, most likely. Best thing is to check ye FO-4 manual an pages 37-38 whereit tell ye how to adjust ye carb. Good luck!!!
