Just got finished overhauling my 8N"s hydraulic system, I have the books and video. Problem is neither on says which component to install first the top cover or the pump? Anyone done this before can get me pointed in the right direction.

Don't matter.

For S&G's i installed my top cover first, and then used a floor jack to slowly raise the pump, and use my hand to guide the control lever intot he valve ont he pump.

You could do it the other way too, and install the pump first. then lower the top cover down by hoist and guide the lever in.. or lower it yourself and have a offspring/wife/girlfriend/neighbor ( neighbors girlfriend? ) guide the rod in for you.. er.. well you know.. (grin)
