Dell, my thermostat is in the top of the head not in the hose, would this temp be hotter?

Most of us use a hose clamp to hold the 8n thermostat int the hose about midway to the radiator.. however.. i'm confused by your statement that your theremo is in the head.. it shouldn't fit in the water outlet, assuming it is the correct thermostat.

Sounder--I'm glad I read this post. The 49 8N I am working on did not have a thermostat in it and I am putting my new one in tonite.

I was expecting that I would have to use a little force to slide the new one into the hose a bit, but after your comments about "securing" the thermostat with a hose clamp, I got to wondering.

Does the thermostat fit tight in the hose and is it necessary to use the hose clamp---any danger/potential problem if you don't?

I didnt put a hose clamp on my 51N either.

Thanks---Tim

Hose Clamp for Thermostat in reply to 8N'r--WI, 03-19-2007 07:51:15
The thermostat is a tight fit when the hose is COLD. However, when things start heating up and the hose softens, the back pressure behind the thermostat will slide it up the hose to the radiator where it won't be in contact with any fluid until things get REALLY hot.

I had problems with overheating, but when I got the thermo held down at the head end, things improved greatly. (Still have problems, but that's another story...)

I think he is talking about the heat sensing unit for his temperature guage, being in the head. This is what I conclude after reading this and his first post.

Hmm... big difference in thermostate, and a temp sender or bulb.. etc.. Especailly if he is asking for advice.. he needs to be real specific..

Rob..... .iff'n yer engine don't look like this, it ain't an 8N or 9N or 2N. And the ONLY radiator thermostat is in the cylinder hose.

Now then the cyclops-eyed NAA Jubilee Red-Tiger OHV engine does have a replaceable cylinder head elbow and its thermostatic DISK mounts between the elbow and head..... ...Dell
