I Recently purchased an 8N in great working condition and want to mix 4 inches of mushroom soil into heavy soil. Three of the acres were plowed last year, and the rest is a hay field. Will a 2 bottom plow be too much for the tractor? I wouldn't want to burn her out. How would an all purpose plow work? Or, is it best to hire someone to do it with a larger tractor? Any advice is appreciated.

If you set the draft and plow up rite it should do the job, the soil izz rite tight here so I run a all purpose plow threw new ground and it sure takes the load off the tractor when i run the bottom plow. If it becomes a problem and the tractor wants to rare up of pull rite bad ease up on the draft till you find the sweet spot. Have you ever ran a bottom plow with draft before. The N has the smallest engine made by a tractor manufacturer to pull a 2 bottom plow it werks cuzz of the Ferguson system. Learn how that werks and you kin figger out the rest.

In general, almost any N with a 2-14 plow is a plowing fool in most soil conditions. I take my 46 2N to the club plowdays every April. Our club is awful heavy in green and yellow. Those guys are now used to my little gray one getting the job done but it's sitll grudging admiration.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I had high hopes it could do the job, and all the replies I received so far were a confirmation that it will. I'll let you know how it goes!! Thanks again.

As a kid growing up on a tobacco farm in eastern NC in the 50s & 60s, I spent hundreds (thousands?) of hours on a 2N. Don't remember ever having problems plowing with 2-bottom plow and had several soil types. thanx

Dad and I plowed anywhere from 14 to 20 acres a year for a lot of years with my 8N and 2 bottom dearborn plow followed by a dearborn disk then planted corn. If I remember correctly it took the better part of a week to plow, disk, drag and plant 20 acres. We raised cattle on nearly 300 acres on 3 farms for several years with only an 8N and C Farmall. I am considering plowing up my hay field next fall and putting in some alfalfa with the same 8N. I will probably only break up around 10 acres though, but it will be fescue sod, and I do not anticipate any problems.

As Bob says but if the soil is heavy you might want say a 2-12 or 2-14. I don't know what you have but theres a number of differant size plows and you need to right size for the job at hand

The 2-bottom Dearborn plow was designed as a companion implement to the "N"'s.

There's no reason the tractor will "burn out" as long as it is in reasonably good condition; full of fluids; and the cooling system is in good condition.
