I just replaced mine because it was squealing.

The new one that came with the 12V conversion kit iw pretty darn loud. It doesn't sound like it's malfunctioning, but I never remember a car alternator being this loud. The new one has an ongoing WHIRRR. At idle, it's clearly the loudest component on the tractor.

I check for overtensioned belt and a belt that may be binding. It has the standard 1/2' deflection with moderate thumb pressure.

The belt appears straight, and the sound doesn't have a rhythym to it, so I don't think there's a flaw in the belt.

Makes me wish I hadn't bought a new muffler.

My delco alternator is loud. At idle, it is clearly the loudest whirring unit thing on the tractor.

Same at low speed or going down hills...thing just whirrrrr s to beat the band.

Seems typical of these units.

I also just bought a 12 volt conversion kit which includes a delco remy 12 v alternator, and I had a similar observation: the thing is kinda loud. Not, like, huge loud, but at idle, I can clearly hear it whirring. I aimed the deflector on my vertical exahust pipe so it points more at me, and now, I don't so much notice the wirring anymore.... But that alternator was louder that I expected.

That's how I would describe it: "I can clearly hear it whirring." It doesn't make a scraping or grinding sound, just a whir.

But the whir is louder than I would expect.

Shot in the dark, but place a bar of soap against the sides of the belt for a second while the motor is running (BECAREFUL) if the sound lessens, it is a belt

Against the outside of the belt? What does that do?

that is a poor mans way to lubricate a fan belt. It works too.

What you mean poor mans way? :-) Ok,OK, so I am poor, but it sure quiets a noisy belt. I have on a number of ocassions thought I was losing a bearing when it was just belt noise. Have a wonderful week end!

Beats that $3.95 can of spray. I guess it's still that price.

Rob,

Mine is very quiet - no whirrrs.....

Perhaps you should consider getting a replacement from the company you ordered it from - it could be defective or the bearing could be a bit loose. Is it a rebuild? If so, then perhaps it was put together quickly and without Quality Assurance measures. I've had to return a lot of rebuilt autoparts over the years because of poor workmanship.

I had it for a year before I installed it.

It came with the kit from Mikes Tractors. I don't know if they sell rebuilt or new, but I bet they are rebuilt.

Sounds strange, I have 12 volt system with AC/Delco alternator, not loud at all. I suppose, if it works, don't fix it.
