8N starter clicks but won't start

49 8N won't start. I get one click from either the starter or the solenoid. If I try it again I get nothing. If I let it sit for a couple of days I get one more click. I replaced battery, solenoid and starter switch. I even took some earlier advice and smacked the starter with a 2x4.

Any advice greatly appreciated...grass is getting tall.

What do the battery cables & grounds look like? A bad cable or ground will cause the symptoms you describe. Pull the starter away from the block & make sure you have a good shiny contact there as well. If that does not work, follow the advice in tip # 43, below, & jump it. If that does not work, post back because the starter could be bad or the bendix could be jammed against the ring gear.

Bruce,
Thanks for the advice. I probably could use some new cables. although When I put a voltmeter on the battery ground and on the starter I don't see a drop in voltage It still reads 5 volts. I will take the starter off and have a look. I'm going to show my ignorance here...If I need to jump it with my truck I am assuming I put the positive on the stud of the starter and the ground to the body. Exactly what do you mean by stud on the starter. I'm not much of a mechanic.

thanks

Rob..... ..take a look at your starter motor. The "stud" is how the electricity gets INTO the starter. It looks like a BOLT with FLAT COPPER buss-bar from the roundcan starter solenoid attached to it by a NUT. Simple, eh?

Clamp your 12-volt jumper to the starter stud or copper buss-bar..... ..respectfully, Dell
