Front tire leaks

Have an 8N with front tires in very good condition. Tires have inner tubes. Problem is that I am in Texas and often get prickley pear and other small thorns in the tires which make it through the tire and cause a leak in the tube; tire of course goes flat.

I have heard of people using "green slime" or aerosol tire fix products but I am not sure how well this works with a tube and what happens long term if I am not lucky enough to locate the thorn.

I have also heard something about a (rigid?)foam which is apparently injected in through the valve stem and creates a kind of a run-flat tire?

Antone have any thoughts as to what might be my best solutions?

I am getting real tired of getting these flats fixed every three months!

I've used slime for a while now on a riding mower with worn out tires, and I love it. As the tires wore out, and started loosing air, I put tubes in them, (tubes = $6 new tires = $25+) but then started getting holes from thorns and stuff. I put in the slime (fairly painless process) and haven't had a problem since.

I seem to have had very good luck with yer EL cheapo "fix em a flat" on lots of things with small hole thorns, and such, even on 4 wheelers.

As "old" mentioned there is a foam that many folks in So Texas use in their tractor tires and it works. The green slime works and it works even after you have gone flat. Follow instructions ( remove valve, remove air, add slime, reinstall valve, then inflate and rotate tire for a good coating. Suggest you contact one of the old tire dealers in the area if you don't want to do it yourself.

Austin:

The best solution I have found for thorn punctures in tractor fronts is tire liners.

These linings made from ground down layers of old tires fit between the tube and the tire and move slightly as the wheels roll, shearing off thorns that make it through the casings.

I once was plagued by flats on my 8N but have had none since installing liners nearly 20 years ago.

Problem is tire liners are getting hard to find and I do not know if they were ever available for the 19" tires.

You might try Gemplers.

You might check Gensco Aircraft Tires in Houston Texas, 800-828-3350. They sell "no flat" thorn proof used aircraft tires for Ag use.

I know for a fact they sell tubes for tires that are 'pre-slimed', meaning they already have green slime in them. I just saw themn at TSC last weekend. I was going to get one, but they didn't have the size for my finish mower. They had a decent variety of pre-slimed tubes, as well as various sizes of slime bottles for do-it-yourself.

I've never tried them, so I can't say how well they work.

Yep theres a foam you can have put in and then you will never have a flat again. It costs a good bit of $$ to do it and its not a run flat type stuff but fills the tube/tire all the way up so there is no air in the tire at all. Another way to slow down flats and cost less if you can find them is a tire liner what that does is puts a 1/4 inch thick piece of rubber between the tube and the tire and it sort of rubs the points off the thorns when they go in the tire. If will not stop thorns but it sure does slow them down and cost is a lot less

SLIME IS GOOD in reply to old, 05-14-2007 14:30:24
I try to keep out of the mesquite out here west of Austin, but I occasionally get one... and SLIME fixed it just fine. (9N, tube-tires on front.) The ones that really worry me are the big "uns on the back....I shore hope I never get a flat back there....
