MY 49 8N HAS SET FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS. AT THE TIME IT WAS PARKED IT HAD BUILT UP WATER IN THE GAS TANK. SO I DRAINED AND CLEANED THE TANK. I HAD NOTICED PREVIOUSLY THAT TURNING ANY OF THE SCREWS, EXCEPT THE IDLE, MADE NO DIFFERENCE IN THE WAY IT RAN. SO I DECIDED TO REBUILD THE CARB WHILE I WAS DOING THE TANK. NOW, 2 YEARS LATER, I ENDED UP BUYING A NEW CARB. I REPLACED THE BATTERY, WIRING HARNESS, RESISTOR, REGULATOR, IGN SWITCH, POINTS, CAP ROTOR AND COIL AND THE PLUGS AND WIRES. IT WON'T START. I GET A HALF HEARTED PUFF IF I PULL THE CHOKE. I AM GETTING GOOD SPARK AND I DOUBLE CHECKED THE FIREING ORDER ETC. I REMOVED THE CARB AND THE EXHAUST PIPE AND HELD MY HAND UP TO THE MANIFOLD WHILE CRANKING. THE INTAKE PULLS IN ON A 4 TURNS. THE EXHAUST PULLS IN ON 3 AND PUFFS OUT ON ONE. 3 STUCK VALVES MAYBE? AM I LOOKING AT A NIGHTMARE TRYING TO FREE THEM UP? I HAVE NOT DONE WORK ON A FLAT HEAD ENGINE BECAUSE ALL THE ONES I HAVE HAD RAN FOR EVER. IF IT WAS AN OVER HEAD CAM I WOULD BE TAPPING AND OILING VALVES RIGHT NOW. ANY IDEAS? THANKS BILL

I'd pull side covers and see if I could squirt-lube them stuck valves with some MMO.. or atf fluid cut with a little mineral spirits/diesel/kerosene... not cut much.. just enough to make it squirt good.

Add some of that MMO or atf ( uncut) to the fuel as well.. it won't hurt and will provide a little lube.

You can also pour a few ounces of that ATF down each sparky hole... do that first.. let it set while you manually squirt-lube the valves. then roll the engine over to expel the atf from the spark plug holes.

Once you get the valves moving keep adding atf tot he fuel for a few runs..

If that don't get it.. you will be pulling the head... don't sweat it.. that ain't a big deal either.. mainly some sweat, cleaning and a 10$ gasket..

THANKS FOR THE INFO. I'M TAKING HER APART THIS MORNING. ONE THING THOUGH. I HAVE ONE OF THOSE "DUH" QUESTIONS. I GET THE "ATF" IS TRANY FLUID, BUT THE MMO, I THINK IS MOTOR OIL BUT THE FIRST M IS ???

Actually.. MMO is marvel mystery oil.

It's way more expensive than ATF ( tranny ) fluid.. so unless I have MMO on hand.. I mix cheap ATF with diesel and just use that instead.

It creeps good.. gets things unstuck.. etc..

Ya might want to turn the capslock off.. it makes it harder to read for some of us folks with bad eyesight..

Thanks, I have some atf here. Will kerosene work? I have that but no diesel. also, what ratio atf to fuel oil?
(sorry about the caps. force of habit for our business)
Again, thanks for all of your help!

Kerosene actually works better than diesel or mineral spirits.. smells better too.

I usually cut 8oz of ATF with 1-2oz of kerosene.. that way it is thinned out a bit so that it will shoot thru a hand held finger pump squirt or spray bottle ( old windex bottle.. etc ).. or more preferably.. a pump-spot oiler.

Expirement... you may have to thin it down further to get it to squirt or spray thru whatever pump / spray bottle you have.

There is no right or wrong.. just keep in mind that it is the ATF that does most of the lube and cleaning.. and the kerosene is the thinning agent.. plus a solvent and will help it to creep into tight spots.

When adding this to oil or gas .. i just add the straight ATF.. no cutting. ( i lil atf in the oil and gass can help get things flushed and un-gummed if they have been sitting for a while.)

Usually if I get a new old tractor that has been setting.. I fill the spark plug holes with some atf-mix and let it set for a few days.. witht he old plugs loosely threaded in to keep dirt out..

then i pul the plugs and rotate the engine over and add more.. replug.. and then come back a day later and remove plugs and then roll the engine over to expell any fluid remaining to prevent hydro-lock.. then i drain the gas and oil and replace with new gas.. and usually cheap walmart or jiffy store oil with some straight ATF in it.. plus a new filter.. i run this for only a few hours as a flush.. then if all is good and no other problems.. I'll change out the oil after maybee.. a few hours if it looks bad.. or perhaps up to 10 hours if it looks clean.. then put in whatever oil I would normally use, plus another new filter.. then move on to the rest of the tractor. Also.. DO use new plugs..

Everyone has their own way to do things.. so you will probably get a few variations on this type of "resurection" procedure..
